Hog Hunt Results
We had 3 forum members plus myself shoot hogs today. The hogs were not cooperating and did not come to feeders, so we took the hunt to the hogs. We posted shooters, did drives, spot and stalked. It worked! One interesting thing was that a "levergun" hunt turned into a "no levergun" hunt due to everyone's circumstances - but the good reasons are excusable! Bosco bought his 1886, but last night while visiting relatives his Grandfather gave him his Great-Grandfather's Krag and some ammo. I encourgaged him to use it and it worked great. A 180 grain poked through a hog and it ran just a short distance. Glen was going to use a different rifle, but he fell and tore his rotator cuff 2 days ago. He borrowed a light-kicking bolt action from his cousin. I saw the hog just 100 yards away to a back-flip and heard it squeel but there was no blood anywhere. Even the dog had trouble figuring out which way that one went. About 3 hours later my partner Brian located it. He was obvious, there was a 3 - 4 inch gaping hole just under his spine. Alive and not-so-well that piggy received another shot and ran a little before tipping over. So much for the .270 Win. Awp101 was kicking tires on which rifle and went with his Springfield 30-06 because the scope mount seemed loose on his Swede. One shot didn't seem to connect, but later he put a 150 grain Remington through the middle of one and it went off a ways and fell over. I was up last and I wanted an eating hog for my neighbor. It was important to me that it was a dry sow and not too big. The spot and stalks all ended up with a pile of pigs followed by a string of pig back-ends. Eventually I one cleared the others just enough and slowed down to a brisk walk. I eased back the hammer on the .50 cal muzzleloader sidelock that I made last year. The sights landed on the spot and I squeezed. The 240 grain lead conical (sabot) is going about 1700+ fps pushed by 100 grains of Triple 7. After the smoke cleared the hog was right where she was when I pulled the trigger but this time she was dead. The bullet went through exactly where I wanted it to with an exit showing some expansion. As I skinned the hogs I pointed out to the boys that I was free to give hog shooting lessons. Open sights, simplistic front stuffer and good shot placement equalled dead right there. I don't know if I could repeat it again but it sure went well that time! It was a great half day hunt and even though the leverguns rested we all accomplished something with a specific rifle that we were each using for our own reasons. Hopefully the other guys will post their photos, but for now mine will have to do......

Is that shoulder shot something that you learned from Brandon?

Posting this reply quite late. For those who are interested.
We got out to the site early and got organized. Like Joe said I was able to use a Krag originally owned and used by my Great Grandfather. My grandfather and countless other relatives have used it deer hunting for many years. The wrist suffered an injury a few years ago and the rifle had not seen much use in a number of years, maybe decades. I wanted a hog for meat and was not going to be choosy. A group came through the woods where I was posted up about 75 yards away. An unlucky one stopped and looked to see what was going on in my direction. I took a lung shot. I saw the hog hump up at the shot and scurry off. I asked Joe if I could go look for blood. Joe instructed me to wait as he wanted to get some more experience for his tracking dog, we had discussed this earlier. I "stood by" and Joe showed up shortly with the dog. I indicated where the hog was shot and sure enough the sign and hog were located where we expected. It was a fun time as Joe has always come through as expected when I have dealt with him.
This particular set up would be an excellent place to bring a new hunter to get them acquainted with big game hunting.
Good time and good eating!
Thanks again Joe!

Joe great to see that. I have a 50 cal New Englander and yours is very similar. Would like to see you try some RB in hunts. My passion as they say in the Black.

Re: Hog Hunt Results
I am def jealous. I have been wanting to take my father on a hog hunting trip. He wants to kill hogs more than any other animal (mainly due to his love for them on the table).
Re: Hog Hunt Results
