My 336- 35 Rem.

Post by Pitchy »

While i await the return of my guide gun from Marlington i broke out this 336 in 35 Rem that was made in 1979.
Nice smooth accurate gun in a good caliber, makes me wonder what i needed a guide gun for

We have the same model of the same vintage - I got a .85" three shot group with factory Rem 200s.

I took one shot yesterday with it at 30 yards and it hit poa but as with all my fixed sight guns it`s hard to focus on the buckhorn
So i have a Whilliams 5D coming in a few days then we`ll see what kind of group it will shoot.
My son has shot a couple of deer with it but i`ve been pretty hooked on my 86, bow or muzzleloaders for a few years.
I think i have Marlin addiction lately

Makes me wonder too!

I've noticed that the older I get, the less I shoot the BIG boomers. .44 Specials, 44 mag rifles and 410's get about 95% of my huntin'/shootin' done :D

Yeah, Pitchy, a grandkid talked me out of my 1895 a couple of years ago and my shoulder celebrated the transfer. And I like the 35Rem/Marlin so well I have two of 'em. An older (1950) 336A with the rifle barrel, standard rifling. The other is a younger brother of yours and Old Savage's, (late '80s). Neither of these likes factory ammo as well as Old Savage's gun: more like 3+" at 100 yds. But the carbine really likes the 180gr. Hornady spitzer with 36.5 grains of RL10x (talking 1.5" at 100yds, not sub-moa). The rifle does fair with the Hornady 205 and 36 grains of the RL10x (2 to 2.5").

Interestingly, with my two, the 20" bbl/micro-groove carbine gets a bit more velocity from any given load than does the 24" bbl rifle.

I should in fairness mention that mine has an old Weaver 3x on that I had to glue the objective back in. Seems perfect for that gun. That target was at 100 yds. Rifles I have seen from that 79/80 period have been particularly smooth and tight.

Yep - that's a great combination - great gun and great cartridge.

Best I've done with mine is about 1.5" at 100 yards with factory
sights. Ammunition was 200 gr. Remington CoreLokt factory load.

Well guys i`m afraid i will probably embarrass myself at 100 yards but we`ll give it a go as soon as the new peep comes.
I got something wrong with my thumb for some reason and it`s getting worse, some kind of infection in it. If i push on the thumb nail it hurts pretty bad and it`s hot and swelling some

I've become a big fan of the .35 Remington. I'll have three of them now when I get the new one that SargeMarlin put in the classifieds. Can't wait.

Here's my 1970 vintage 336 with a cheater on top at 50 yds.

Love that thing. Can't wait to shoot something other than paper with it!

Starting to see the old .35 Rem being offered in more guns.
Hope it makes a solid comeback.
It's superior to the .30-30 Win in my opinion when "mixed bag" hunting in country where bigger animals than deer may be taken ............ I've killed a couple of moose with mine while deer hunting.
Owned my 336C in .35 Rem for years.......my nephew who just started hunting has got it now.
If I had notched that gun for every animal taken over the years there wouldn't be enough wood left to hold onto.

I used to load .357 cal 158 grain SWC handgun bullets ahead of a few grains of Herc Red Dot in .35 Rem cases to take grouse & rabbits for the hunting camp stew pot........took the heads clean off the grouse without an ounce of meat spoiled or lead shot in the flesh to break my teeth on.

Pitchy,
Get thyself to a healer and get that thumb checked out. You don't want it to get so bad you can't thumb the hammer back and shoot. Not to mention how hard it would be to hold a short gun with out it.

Thanks Joe, luckily it`s my left hand but your right and i`m hoping we go to the city today and i`ll swing by the VA clinic and have them take a look.
Had a chop saw blade explode once that took half that thumb off but they stitched it back on and hadn`t been a bother until now.

Magic stuff, my grandmother used it all the time, worked full time until she was 87 and only quit because we sold the farm and she moved away to Trenton with her sisters where her room was on the third floor - all stairs - died right after her surprise 90th birthday party - probably figured nothing big would happen for 10 years then. She used to walk 2 miles to the Dr to get her blood pressure checked - said it was a little hard to jump the creek in the winter. Old Doc Shaver thought her BP was about 265 for years - think what might have been going on was a hearing test.

I got my first "deer rifle" for Christmas 1975. Marlin .35 Remington. I have killed more deer with that rifle than all of the others combined.
Even now I will hunt with that gun until I kill a deer before I pull out my bolt actions. I killed an 8 pt buck this past season at 75 yards with the 200 grain Core-Lockt. The first thing that hit the ground was the deer nose. I swear he stood on his head!

I had a very nice older Marlin in .35...I liked the factory sights beter than the peep, but that was some years ago...The .35 rem in the Marlin rifle is a very popular gun here in eastern PA for deer and black bear.

I think they are hard to beat for accuracy firing offhand...makes me look a better shot than I am.
