Buried my dog this morning.

Post by WCF3030 »

Long story short we had him into the Vet last year to see what was wrong with him, and the vet gave us several possibilities none good and could not know for sure without several more test. A decision was made that we were not in a financial position to continue with that and we would continue to take care of him until his suffering was too much.
Well that was this morning.
After a very good day yesterday of long walks and playing with the family at the park I heard him this morning howling in his kennel. He must have had an internal bleed, possibly a lung. Thankfully none of the children had heard him and I was able to load him into the truck and take him out to his favorite hunting grounds. We said our goodbyes and I put him down under a nice spruce facing South East into the warm morning sun, were we had relaxed after many hunts and hikes. We had 5 1/2 good years with Joe and he brought plenty of unique crazyness to our home in only a way a beagle could. Those who have had one will know what I mean.
Needless to say I came home to unhappy house, especially my 14 year old daughter Sara.

I remember several posts were members had pasted stories of man’s best friend and thought I could pass those along to my daughter.
If any of you had saved these and have them around please post and I will see they get passed along to Sara.
Thanks.

Well, I know how it is... my condolences.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

The Rainbow Bridge

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears arrogant idiot forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Eulogy for a Dog

The best friend a man has in this world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name, may become traitors to their faith. The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it the most. A man’s reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads. The one absolutely unselfish friend that a man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him and the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog.

A man’s dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master’s side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer, he will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens.

If fortune drives the master forth an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him to guard against danger, to fight against his enemies, and when the last scene of all comes, and death takes the master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by his graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even to death.

+1 to Blaine's comment. We all know there's never exact "replacement," but with dogs, getting another special critter will go a long way toward healing and he/she will occupy an equal if different place in your hearts.

I really like Otto's dog eulogy. Its the truth. Its why I like dogs better than most/all people and like the eulogy says, even the closest people in your life can turn on you in a flash.

I have buried 10 dogs in the last 15 years or so and each time it does not get any easier.

Your little buddy is at peace now. You and your family will walk with your heads down for awhile. Get another dog--its the best mental therapy.

Its probably why we keep close to a dozen dogs around here as when one dies, the others with their wagging tails and smiles takes the hurt out of it---a little--------------------------Sixgun

I am so very very sorry for you and your families loss.

I'm about to go through the same loss, my best buddy is a 15 year old GSP that I've had since he was 5 weeks. He is fighting cancer and doesn't have much time left.

I cry when I just think of him being gone.

Sorry, Amigo. We lost our Jack Russel, "Little Joe" last year to a rattle snake. He stepped in between the rattler and my wife and another girl. He had been bitten before, but this time the venom went straight into his blood stream. I will never forget the pain, and the understanding, in his eyes when we had to put him down. He went like the little warrior he was, and left a void in our lives. God gives them to us, and they enrich our lives more than we their's. The blessing is that we have them for awhile, and that remains with us as long as we live.

Amen to that. My dog is one of the most important members of my household. He sleeps at my feet as I type this. It's a shame that the average human lives 70 or 80 years and a dog lasts just small part of that. It means that all dog lovers will feel the pain of losing such a good buddy. I hope you find comfort in the many good memories of your dog.

Thank you for the replies.
I kept the kids busy yesterday with chores and spring cleaning, then took them for a rare treat of doughnuts and hot chocolate. Took a ride along the river told jokes and got everybody to laugh.
Came home and kept them busy until bed time.
May start looking in the shelters for another dog. Right now everyone seem to be spoiling our other dog.
I also passed a link of this post to my daughter, I'm sure it will help.
Thanks again.

I'm sorry for your loss. They say that a reason a dog's life is so short is because he lives it fully and gives all of his love and devotion to man. I know how difficult it is to lose such a dear friend.

In addition to the other references, like Rainbow Bridge, you may find this a touching sentiment as well:

"Beau"
by Jimmy Stewart

He never came to me when I would call
Unless I had a tennis ball,
Or he felt like it,
But mostly he didn't come at all.

When he was young
He never learned to heel
Or sit or stay,
He did things his way.

Discipline was not his bag
But when you were with him things sure didn't drag.
He'd dig up a rosebush just to spite me,
And when I'd grab him, he'd turn and bite me.

He bit lots of folks from day to day,
The delivery boy was his favorite prey.
The gas man wouldn't read our meter,
He said we owned a real man-eater.

He set the house on fire
But the story's long to tell.
Suffice it to say that he survived
And the house survived as well.

On the evening walks, and Gloria took him,
He was always first out the door.
The Old One and I brought up the rear
Because our bones were sore.

He would charge up the street with Mom hanging on,
What a beautiful pair they were!
And if it was still light and the tourists were out,
They created a bit of a stir.

But every once in a while, he would stop in his tracks
And with a frown on his face look around.
It was just to make sure that the Old One was there
And would follow him where he was bound.

We are early-to-bedders at our house--
I guess I'm the first to retire.
And as I'd leave the room he'd look at me
And get up from his place by the fire.

He knew where the tennis balls were upstairs,
And I'd give him one for a while.
He would push it under the bed with his nose
And I'd fish it out with a smile.

And before very long
He'd tire of the ball
And be asleep in his corner
In no time at all.

And there were nights when I'd feel him
Climb upon our bed
And lie between us,
And I'd pat his head.

And there were nights when I'd feel this stare
And I'd wake up and he'd be sitting there
And I reach out my hand and stroke his hair.
And sometimes I'd feel him sigh
and I think I know the reason why.

He would wake up at night
And he would have this fear
Of the dark, of life, of lots of things,
And he'd be glad to have me near.

And now he's dead.
And there are nights when I think I feel him
Climb upon our bed and lie between us,
And I pat his head.

And there are nights when I think
I feel that stare
And I reach out my hand to stroke his hair,
But he's not there.

Oh, how I wish that wasn't so,
I'll always love a dog named Beau.

Hi All,

About six months ago, I came from the back of the house to find our 7 1/2 year old Golden Retriever, Grace, laying dead on the living room floor. Not a yip, whine, or bark, and no apparent cause....not a mark on her. She apparently just layed down and died. I miss my Gracie-girl.

We know when we invite them into our homes and lives that we'll be here after they're gone, and that we'll be going through the pain of saying goodbye. From my perspective we're much better off having had their company and companionship.

May God give you and your family His peace.

Lost a few in my long years. It is never easy. Even though he has been gone 32 years, I fondly remember my Cocker Spaniel from childhood and still miss him. Also, my wifes dog, just a mix, but almost as smart as my Cocker spaniel. We lost him at 6 years old. You expect them to go 10-12 years at least, and kind of catches you off guard when they leave early.

Will say a prayer for you and your dog.

I feel your pain! My "little girl", a beagle terrier mix, died 10 yrs ago last month. I have her ashes on my dresser and just can't bring myself to getting another dog. Maggie was a gem who feared guns! :o But I never held that against her! :D

Worst thing about dogs is the good ones don't live long enough. Sorry for your loss.

Thanks.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error.

Our dog had surgery for cancer in January of 2010. It kept him alive and happy till this past February, when he left us. It has been among the hardest things in my life to lose a dog, and I still feel the grief for a dog who died almost 25 years ago...I have pictures of 3 of my dogs in my wallet.

We adopted a rescue dog last month from a Labrador rescue group. They are a fine bunch of people, and were able to find us a wonderful 3 year old Lab/Rotweiller mix.
But we will never forget our old friends.
