356 and/or 307 Improved

Post by Marlin32 »

Okay, now what do you all think about a 356 Win Improved or 307 Improved?

Would you gain enough velocity to make the 356 a bit flatter? Maybe just a smide more punch at 220 yards?

Same goes for the 307. Would "Improving" it get you to 308 performance?
(have a BLR 308, don't need it, but would love to have a Marlin in 307 Improved or unimproved for that matter)

The .356 and .307 cartridges brought the 94 carbine into the world of 250 yard North American BIG game hunting cartridges. Your suggestions will only improve it. Sad thing is that nobody else saw it this way and nobody bought them. The .356 winchester model 94 is my holy grail in hunting rifles, close enough in power and range to the great .348 without the weight of the equally great model 71. a 200 yard 30-06 with a heavier, larger diameter bullet. needless to say, i'm interested :D

The 356 is my favorite deer cartridge. But if I load it hot it kicks hard in the Winchester 94 . So I don't know if I would want a hotter 356 cartridge in a levergun. The 356 has plenty of power and is still pleasant to shoot. I am going to try load development with the new Lever powder. I also have a 338 MX that is becoming one of my favorites .

Over at marlinowners someone just chamber a 30 caliber Wildcat that pushes the maximum capabilities of the Marlin.

I have a 307 winchester big bore. Works fine to 200 yards--- has been getting little use though-- the 308 marlin express in an XLR is getting used now.

Seattlerdwarrior has what amounts to a 307 Winchester Improved built on a Marlin 336 action. Mr. Nonneman built it for him.

http://shootersforum.com/showthread.htm?t=69457

He dubbed it the .30 Levermaximum and it is an interesting cartidge. The Marlin 336 action will not acccept a steady diet of high pressure 307 Winchester loads and the improved case shape overcomes this slight deficiency.

Out to 240-yards there is no differencer between the 307 Winchester and the 308 Marlin Express. Sadly, the Winchester is obsolete, so today, if you are looking for a new rifle the Marlin is the way to go. If you want a custom rifle, Eric’s Levermaximum looks good. Eric had several rifles built up by Mr. Nonneman and they have been very accurate rifles when shot with full power loads.

Love my 356 Win too. I use the 200 gr. RN Rem bullets loaded to 2330fps and it is great out of my 94 Win. Seems to me the recoil feels less than any of my 06's and definitly less than my 4570 Ruger #3. Sort of feels like a mouse gun compared to hot 4570 loadsafish4570
