North West Mounted Policeman Harry Francis, served 1892-1897.
The early Canadian western lawman. Different than the early west American lawman in a very British way. However very capable lawman all the same.
When I was a kid all Canadian lawmen wore suicide holsters with a buttoned flap (most carried a snub in thier jacket pocket handy while keeping your hands warm, my Uncle carried an officers SS Walther PP he "liberated" from an SS officer in Holland). Notice he has the flap folded back to access the grip.

Not a relative just an archived photo.
My family does predate the provincial status and were in the North West Territories before Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba were formed from the old territory. My grandpa homesteaded in northern Alberta in 1930 after the dust bowl blew the family out of Saskatchewan during the depression. The homestead there dated to the turn of the last century, early in 1900's. Of course the North West and Yukon Territories continued to exist north of the 60th parallel.

So many NWMP Officers had such short careers. It was quite typical to sign up for five or six years and then move on to more lucrative employment. And they wore their hats funny in photographs!
