Sawed off Stevens
When I was a young teen in 1967, the only shotgun I had access to was an old Stevens in 16 gauge. It was choked FULL and I missed more than I could hit with it. One morning in Jr. High home room I was complaining to my buddy about this shotgun. Our conversation was overheard by our Shop Teacher. He offered to "fix it" for me. He told me to get the OK from my Dad.
I talked to Dad about it and he said go ahead. So next day I brought my un-loaded shotgun to school on the bus (in a case). No kidding!!! My shop teacher cut the barrel to 22 inches on the lathe and re-fitted the bead. After that, my shooting improved tremendously!!
A "sawed off" shotgun barrel is useful more things than home defense. The open patterns certainly helped me on running rabbits and moving squirrels.

I got two dove this year with my Great Grandfathers Montomery Wards sxs, which he shortened a bit while he was in his 80's. He couldn't see very far and "By God if I can see it, I'm gonna hit it", so he lopped a couple inches off of it. When you throw a 3 foot wide pattern dove hunting is much easier. Who Knew?

In my teens I thought the only way to go was full choke, till I bought a Spanish S/S choked cylinder and improved cylinder, boy did my shooting improve!!!

My 1919 Riverside Arms side by side was cured of that "full and full" disease a whole lotta years ago!
Still quite pointable, but you really have to be quick to get doubles on the corners at SKEET!

My dad cut the chokes off my Stevens double 16 for the same reason. It helped.
Years later I patterned it and found out 25 yards was too far.

I sometimes wonder if shotguns weren't choked that was years ago when shells weren't as good as what we have today. As the years went by the shells got better and it took the gunmakers a while to change their thinking, or at least what people would buy.

Re: Sawed off Stevens
Sawed offs do come in handy for a quail gun. I have actually seen limits taken after flushing our first covey and shooting only two shots. HOWEVER, I dont see a sawed off being good for much else in the line of hunting, I guess it could be ok if you get close on squirrel or rabbit. Dove and Pheasant dont seem like much of a possibility.

Took a firearm to school? I'm shocked and incensed.
Surprised they didn't lock down entire neighborhod, call for TV coverage, arrest you & your dad & then issue statements calumniating NRA.

The past is another country. I myself have one of those cut back shotguns. Works a treat...mouthpiece wrote:Took a firearm to school? I'm shocked and incensed.
