OT- OLD family photos, Civil War, etc

Spent some time with my oldest sister today, and she's been working on our family history for the last couple years. Thought I would share some of the more interesting photos she has dug up.

First one is my Great Grandfather's family in 1884. The smallest child standing in front is my Grandfather.





Not sure of the year on this one, we're guessing early to mid 1870's, but it's my Great Grandmother pictured with her Father and Brother.




Also found out that my Great, Great Grandfather was Capt. John Orf of the Union Army.




Here is a photo of his Fort during the Civil War, located near St. Charles MO. Capt. Orf is in the picture, but it's hard to make him out.



I found it most interesting. Fortunately for me, my sister is making a book for each of us kids to have when she has everything collected.

That is just too cool. I was scanning family photos this morning. It is hard to figure out who some of these folks are and we're only going back 1-2 generations.

That is very neat. I have been working on my family history for about 6 months now. I have to take breaks now and then cause it gets so exhausting looking through tons of census and other documents.

Most of my family (my great great grandfather and all his brothers) were in the 26th Alabama Infantry. Some were in the 38th Alabama Infantry and one was in the 1st Alabama Infantry. I wish I had as much luck as you with the pictures. Mine are few and far between.

You ggGrandfather was well armed with those two pistols. The one he is holding looks like a Remington-Beals 36? Many Southern Cavalrymen started off with the family flintlock rifle, until they were able to upgrade to captured weapons. Others were lucky enough to bring a pistol or double barreled shotgun to the fight.

Don't have a photo of my ggGrandfather James "Monroe" Cash, but I have his Civil War records. He served in the Confederate 5th Tennessee Cavalry(McKenzie's), Co. B from early 1862 to War's end. He was also a Mexican War Veteran. Hope to visit his unmarked grave someday with my sons and place a marker for him and wife.

One of the earliest photos I have is of his sons who went to Texas about 1880. This was taken about 1914-5 near Joy, Clay Co. TX. My Great Grandparents are seated on right and my Grandfather seated below them(arms folded), flanked by his twin bros. They farmed and ranched in Knox Co. TX.

They were also correct.

Yep....and not the smaller 36 but the larger full sized 44 from the longer web under the barrel. I think it is an 1858 as I do not see the extra cut out notches(to rest hammer) of the 1863. It's hard to tell. The image appears to be reversed, as the cut out for loading the caps is on the other side.

This is my great grandfather's obituary.



Green Richardson Answers Last Call
Green Richardson, aged 90 years, one of the few remaining Confederate
veterans in this county, died at Imboden Monday. He was 90 years, 7 months
and 13 days of age.
Mr. Richardson was born near Smithville in this county and spent his
entire life within its borders. He enlisted in the Confederate forces
during the Civil War.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.L. Devore at the residence in
Imboden yesterday afternoon with interment in the Old Bethel cemetery.
Johnson Undertaking Company of Walnut Ridge had charge of funeral
arrangements.
Mr. Richardson is survived by two sons, A.N. Richardson of St. Louis and
A.R. Richardson of Imboden; two daughters, Mrs. E.E. Gutherie of Jesup and
Mrs. Ida Borah of Imboden.
Palibearers were J.H. Chaplain, A. L. Chaney, Neil McLeod, B. Duvali, L.H.
Kaiser and Sid Hillhouse.

So often many old family photos and letters become lost and destroyed. It is a great thing to have a part of your family history to see and touch. I am very glad to see that you, and so many others have these things to see those that were here before you. History that is close to you is, in my opinion, becomes a very personal part of your life.
