OT - How Many Have you Owned... cars that is:

Post by Griff »

Rather than make a left turn on the other vehicular thread, how many cars or vehicles have you owned? I figured out mine...

#1 - '50 Ford Woody
#2 - '59 chevy 3200 p/u (got with a 250 6IL, installed a 354ci DeSoto FirePower & trans, and then... after finding out how expensive it was to simply BURN the rubber off the tires, I traded for,
#3 - '55 chevy 210 wagon with 283 & powerslide... this one met it's demise wrapped up against the front of a .67 Dodge Polaris, colored like a police squad car... oh the pain! Parts left over begat
#4 - the sedan above, and while it languished in Dad's garage under something called "grounded", the surf called, so I added
#5 - '55 VW van, it was very problematic, and left to pay for
#6 - '57 VW van, cruisin' on 13" chevy wheels, lowered to the pan... and very cool... think '60's in So Cal, then got offered a smokin' deal on
#7 - '57 VW p/u, but it was way more work than it'd ever been worth... and I pawned it off on some unsuspecting rube, picked up
#8 - '61 VW bus, fixer upper, sold at profit, and set off across country to see the US in #6, it died somewhere near New Orleans during Madi Gras... whole story in the month I stayed there! Don't ask, & I won't tell, but I ended up in Omaha, NE and after walkin' to work and bummin' rides bought
#9 - '50 chevy sedan delivery (kept it for 16 years and finally couldn't resist the outrageously huge money I was offered for a clunker in primer grey ($9K), tho it did have a '69 Camaro Z28 eng & trans; during the same time I bought and fixed up
#10 - '57 chevy 2dr hardtop; sold to fund drivin' #9 back to Mom & Dad's in CA (Uncle Sam seemed to desire my company!)
Since, for some unknown reason, I couldn't get insurance on #3 so it stayed in Pop's garage, and they got me
#11 - '50 Pontiac sedan... (this is what I was driving when I met my future wife... proving there's no accounting for taste in automobiles! Smoked the engine on the freeway and the folk's broke down and helped me finance
#12 - '67 Ford Cortina; mystery car... but it was transportation that the folks deemed safe while I built
#13 - VW bug from parts... think '58, '59, '60, '61, a few Porsche parts thrown in when found cheap! (wife sold it while I was in VN and bought:
#14 - '65 Alpha Romeo sedan (marriage needn't tame us! This one was a 1600 FI, 6 spd unit, loved racing Porsche 911s)
#15 - '71 Vega GT, (warranty put a '72 eng in it), traded in on
#16 - '74 chevy K10 p/u
#17 - '58 VW baja bug added for fun! sold for some reason or other, along with the dirt bikes... Oh yea, wife's pregnancy... kids cost SO MUCH! (I'll ask him someday if he was worth it)?
#18 - '77 Toyota p/u, rolled in the mud and traded it in on
#19 - '72 chevy blazer, sold to huntin' pard... just couldn't leave it alone and finally wore me down... then he wrecked it... yea friends!
#20 - '64 chevy C10 p/u, sold to buy #22
#21 - '82 Olds Cutlass wagon... yehaw... the 350 diesel! What a hog. But in a cool sorta way! traded for #23
#22 - '88 chevy V30 p/u, (4wd dually, 454, TH400, detriot locker in rear & limited slip in front axle... go anywhere truck!, traded for #24
#23 - '91 Camara RS (still in garage and one of those many projects to do!
#24 - '05 chevy K30 p/u, (4wd dually diesel w/allison 6 speed auto, crewcab).

And that doesn't include the WIFE's cars!
'65 Corvair Monza while we were dating, and first married. She sold it after having to commute to LA for an Austin-America... then to a Datsun F10, a Nissan 280Z (her brother loaned it to a friend and it got wrapped around a telephone pole... you know... they expected ME to pay for that!); then to a Volvo 244 and back to chevy for a Celebrity '84, then she got my Camaro (how'd THAT happen? Oh yea... the kid, the one that I sold all them other vehicles to pay for, got the Celebrity), and lastly to a '03 chevy C10 LS p/u.

You know what..? This was a fun exercise... and to think that I went thru all those between 15 & 55. But, while 24 vehicles in 40 years seems like a lot, if my figurin' is correct, a weighted average would yield an average of 6.18 years! Some were kept only a few months, others... well a bit longer!

The Subarus have been some of the most dependable vehicles for driving in Kansas winters. I can't imagine not having at least one around, The '98 Dodge truck has been a good one, it is mostly used for pulling assorted trailers. The Honda is my daily driver (40 mile round trip work commute - 30+mpg)

The Cherokee became my hunting rig after my wife got the Outback.

My years are much fewer than you guys, so my list is much shorter...eight verhicles, all of which were/are used off-road heavily for hunting, exploring, etc. The Landcrusier / LX470 platform is second to none, IMO, for exploring and daily driving. Except the gas mileage bites.

62 Mercury Comet, used.

Then new:
68? Triumph Spitfire
67 Mustang
72 Ford
84 Mercedes E
85Cadillac
87 Fleetwood
94 Vette ragtop
2006 Buick

several pick ups & misc, boring stuff other family members drove but that I bought for them.
The Buick was boring, too. Car designed for an old fanny burp to drive.

62 Comet was probably boring as well, but it was my first car.

Wow! This is gonna be tough. Turned 72 earlier this month so a bunch of rides.

1. 1947 HD 74 knuckle
2. 1937 Indian Sport Scout
3. 1947 Studebaker Champion Pickup
4. 1952 GMC 1/2 ton-added Olds V8 and hydromatic
5. 1949 Chevy 3100 Custom Cab (Dad traded the jimmy for this one while I was in basic) This truck currently runs a Small Block 400/Turbo400, IFS, 4 wheel disc brakes, etc. I've put about 300,000 on it and it still turns heads and wins an occasional trophy.
6. VW beetles, I can't remember them all but several during my 62 mile one way commute.
7. 1967 Plymouth Furyll w/383, 4 speed
8. 1955 Olds 88
9. 195? BSA Gold Star
10. 1970 VW Beetle
11. 1975 HD Sportster
12. 1980 Olds 88 Diesel (great car, high mpg, service dept clueless)
13. 1986 Pontiac Grand Prix 2+2 (1175 made) aero coupe
14. 1995 Chevy 1/2 ton, stepside
15. 199? Ford Explorer Limited
16. 1995 Explorer Eddie Bower
17. 1996 Explorer Limited
18. 1999 Chevy Tahoe
19. 2001 Dodge/Cummins 1 ton flatbed
20. 2006 Ford Freestyle AWD (Visualize Subaru on steroids)
I know I've missed a few because I started with a '35 Ford tudor before I had a license and there was a Crosley and a Vega in there somewhere but neither ran long enough to count. The Vega would get 40 MPG if you drove it with the vacuum gauge and then there was a Pinto that would get 38 with an automatic and 3 or 4 fat girls in it. Go figure.
Other bikes included BSA 650, a new Yamaha 650, 45 inch HD, '84 HD Bagger, 900 BMW
We won't get into boats or tractors

1st car: '73 AMC Ambassedor Brougham 360 V8. Was my Grandparents car, Sold to me in 1978 for $800.00 with 23,000 miles on it. This car got me through college and early married life. Made 2 complete trips from Kansas to Seattle and back. I sold the car in 1993 with 150,000 miles on it.

2nd car: '82 Dodge Omni 2.2L. Purchased car used in November 1984 with 19000 miles on it. Had this car until Feb. 2004, engine died with a stuck valve. I donated the car to the local High School Automechanics class.

3rd car: '83 Chrysler Lebaron 2.2L. Very gutless car, purchased from my parents in 1992 with 83000 miles on it. Sold car to dealer in 2002 with 137000 miles on it when bought '03 Honda Accord.

4th Vehicle: 1993 Dodge Dakota Club pickup. 3.9L V6, purhased new in 1993. Still have and use, truck now has 84,000 miles on it but is defenitly showing its chronological age.

5th car: 2003 Honda Accord EX-L 2.2 liter 160HP. Purcased car new in December 202 for main car and for wifes car and still have it. Wife and car are currently in Seattle as she is caring for her elderly parents.

6th car: 2004 Honda Civic EX 1.7liter 127HP. I loved this car as it was my car. Purchased new in February 2004. Lost the car in June 2010 when Son was t-boned by a driver of a large tow truck going about 45 MPH and ran a red light. THe civic was a total loss with just over 50,000 miles miles on it but cant say enough good about Honda engineering. The car absdorbed the impact and saved my Sons life (along with guardian angels and the Grace of God)as he escaped with a only concussion and minor cuts and bruises. Impact was on drivers door.

1: 1961 Olds Delta 88 My cop uncle got it out of impound for parking tickets and gave it to me.
2: 1960 Chevrolet Biscane another uncle gave it to my folks because he was moving overseas, after it blew up, my parents gave it to me and I overhauled it. My brother wrecked it.
3: 1967 Pontiac Bonneville 421 tri-power, auto. Blew up, parked, then sold.
4: 1958 Ford Fairlane Custom, shoehorned a 1967 390 into it. Sold it to my brother after buying 5, who blew it up, put a full race 352 out of a stock car in it. Blew that up. Got parked.
5: 1967 Fairlane GT 390, 4 speed, drove until I bought 6 then my brother bought it from me (but never paid for it) Wrecked.
6: 1971 Plymouth Road Runner, 383 auto, air. Now has 440, still have.
7: 1971 Torino GT 351, 4 speed, Wrecked by me this time.
8: 1967 Charger, 318 auto, drove the heck out of it for a lot of years. Transmission went out and some guy offered more than I way more than I paid for it in that condition. Sold it.
9: 1979 Dodge shortbox 4X4, 318 auto full time. Later upgraded to "built" 360, 300k+ later, have replaced about every part on it but still have.
10: 1973 Datsun 240Z, Sold about a year & a half ago. Miss it.
11: 1987 Pontiac Fiero 4cyl, 5 speed. Sold it because it cost the moon to insure, road like a buckboard, didn't have any room, wasn't comfortable and was a pain to work on. The Datsun would blow its doors off, was more comfortable, had far more room and got better gas mileage doing it.
12: 1988 Olds 98, was given to me by my father. After my brother got better cars for his kids, he'd given it back to him. Still have.
13: 1985 Chevy S-10 Blazer, V-6, 5 speed, bought, blew up, overhauled. Found out there are harder vehicles to work on than a Fiero but still have.

skipping the motorcycles & airplanes

and edited because I can't count.

I do better 'keeping it simple' with vehicles than with guns...

1975 - 1986 Ford Fairlane -
  • $50 purchase
1988 - 1981 2wd manual-everything Chevy 1/2-ton Pickup -
  • traded an old generic .45 ACP for it that I gave $210 for new
1995 - Chevy 3/4-ton Pickup with 4wd, A/C (quit working in 2001), and manual windows
  • (because the electric ones would probably have quit in 2001 as well... )
THAT vehicle I paid for by selling my pride and working for an HMO :( for 4 years
Those are the only three vehicles I've owned in 36 years, other than these:

Bought half-interest (kept on my place, neighbor and I both used it) in this Dozer for $6,000 then 4 years later sold it for $5,500. 8)

I still own the first one I ever purchased, that was mine. I bought it brand new. It was a 75 Ford 250 4wd pickup. We still use it on the farm.

Let's see now, if I can remember the rest.
71 VW Bug
74 VW bug
67 Datsun Pickup
77 Dodge Polaris
81 Plymouth Horizon (most hated and sorriest car)
78 Thunderbird (one of my most favorite, and I only gave $750.00 for and kept it for many years)
77 Caddy (big 4 door sedan, another favorite, I kept it until it was so ragged out, I couldn't stand to drive it anymore, finaly sold it for $300.00, and my wife got mad at me for selling it)
86 Masda Pickup
79 Jeep CJ5
85 Chevy K5 Blazer (my son still drives this one)
83 F250 4WD (I still have and will probably hang onto it, because it's simple to work on.
87 Chevy Suburban, another favorite, but finally had to give up on it)
02 Grand Chreokee ( still got it, and I guess it's been pretty good, but has some agrivating issues, like windows that fall down, due to the stupid engineering of the child protection breakaway linkage that trashes the window regulators, and I hate the higher tech, and expensive fixes, that are sometimes required, like a board in the tail lights, that if it goes out, you have to buy the whole light assembly, $200.00, and I could go on) Plus with all of the new fangled electronical stuff, it has the ability to quite you, and has without warning, and it can't be fixed on the side of the road.
03 Short wheelbase Chevy pickup, bought it for my daughter, been a good truck.
87 Jimmy Blazer (full size like the old K5's) I love these old vehicles, as they are pretty dependable, easy to work on, and parts are not too high, normally, A big Favorite of mine.

I also have owned a few Harley's, and still have a 98 Wide Glide, and an 04 Roadking. I will probably keep them until I am done riding.

Gas milage is important, but in the past, I used to look for good old used gas guzzlers, because I could buy them cheap, and they still made fine old cars for years. By doing it that way, I often felt I could buy and drive the bestest for leastest, I would buy a good old American machine, cheap, and to hell with the gas milage. But I am afraid that era is about over.

I can't even remember the name of my first car, but it was some french sedan with giant suicide doors on it, that was a fun car because I didn't care what I did to it put it on it's side more then once, took two people to put back on it's wheels.
If we are counting bikes also:
Don't know the year Chapperal.
66 Rambler classic
64.5 Mustang with a 289 CJ in it.
totegoat, remember those?!
68 Murcury Cougar.
68? Plymouth Barracuda.
Pontiac LaManz Don't remember the year. with a Pontiac 350 Not the Chevy in later years.
Jeep CJ5 built for hill climbs, fastest off the live car I ever owned
66 Mustang
Triumph TR7, fun car.
Murcury Capri, the early ones.
Lincoln Continental MKIV
Yamaha 400
Yamaha 650
66 Chevrolet pick up truck
Ford Taurus MT5 only car I ever bought new!
Another Jeep CJ5
74 Pontiac Fiero, Still got it.
74 Chevy Corvette, Still got it.
99 Dodge Durango, I miss this one.
Ford Explorer for hunting, it was no good but I used it till I hit an Elk with it :D
Another Dodge Durango, don't miss it at all!
Chevy Trailblazer, Still got it.
07 Yamaha VStar 650, Still got it.
99 Harley Davidson Road King, Still got it.
02 Chevy 1500 PU, Still got it.
Audi 5000.
Some chevy thing that I got rid of a quick as possible to get the above mentioned Ford Taurus.
There where other cars that I can't remember just now because I wanted to get rid of them almost as soon as I got them, mostly got them because I had no choice, hard times cause hard dissions.

A little redundant with my postings on the other thread, but I'll join in
:
#1.- 1961 Buick Special Dlx Station Wagon. 215 ci aluminum V8. My college ride. Fabulous car. Just right size and way ahead of its time in all respects. Very scarce to find now, esp wagon. Should never have sold it
#2.- 1962 Buick Skylark Coupe - 215 V8 w/ 4bbl. Great driving car but one of my regrets. Engine had been poorly maintained and needed a lot of TLC. I had been bitten by the little alum V8 bug with the wagon but too young to see this one had seen a harder life demanding a complete re-do I didn't have the jingle to satisfy.
#3.- 1965 Corvair Monza Coupe 110 4 Sp, "converted" to 66 Corsa 140 spec mid-life. My combined miles 225,000 or so. Great fun. A friend and I used to collect and fix 'em up in our spare time. At one point we had some fifteen Corvairs in various states of disrepair in a lot--our eyes ultimately bigger than our restoration time or wallets. My family (and friends) were Corvair owners going way back to our brand new 62 4 Dr Monza with a/c in Japan--we saw loaded by crane on a ship in Oakland and unloaded in Fukuoka. After 10 years of a reliable, fun ride, lack of a/c on my particular 65 (in Phoenix!) finally drove me to contribute to someone else's collection. Would like another some day--a 66 Corsa Convertible--courtesy of someone else's elbow grease this time!
#4.- 1978 Honda Accord LX 2 Dr hatch. 5 Sp. The original that "started it all." Along with the Civic, the one that drove GM and many others nuts to duplicate. Great car. Bought in so-so condition from family at 58k, rebuilt and drove it to 175k.
#5.- 1979 Ford F-150 Super Cab 4x2, 6.75' bed. 302 then 351. Both tied to a C6. Great hunter/camper--with Brahma shell.
#6.- 1988 Acura Intregra LS 5 Dr Hatch. 5 Sp. Also great car. Twin cammer and loads of fairly economical fun to drive.
#7.- 1996 Toyota Camry SEV6 Cpe, actually fairly rare in this trim. Per'd leather, moonroof. Added BBS wheels. Great car. Sold at 120k.
#8. 2001 Toyota RAV4. Temporary/shared owner with family. Had to stir it a bit in spots but once you got he drill, not an issue and a great little rig.
#9.- 1999 Toyota Solara SLEV6 successor to and equally reliable/great car as above Camry Coupe but even more Lexus-like. Added some nice factory BBSs to this too and probably the one that tugs at my heart the most. Would like another some day.
#10.- 2006 Toyota Highlander Limited V6 AWD. Successfully answered my wish essentially for a 4 door Solara with ground clearance and 4x4.
When the time comes, if I can I'll likely get another.
Think that's it!

My brother in law wrote up this list about a month ago, and he's had 81 vehicles since about 1983 or so. And with him, there's no end in sight.

I think I've owned (maybe) 9 cars since I started driving my own car, at 18.

I even got to drive 5 of them.

1979 Jeep CJ 7. Loved that thing, Rolled it. Totaled...
1981 Mercury Capri. Yuck!! Traded.
1976 Olds Cutlass (350, four barrel!). Bought it for $600 from a little old Lady. Great Car!!
1982 Bronco. Was on my third used engine whien I traded it for..
1984 Mercury Couger. Again, yuck!
1989 Dodge Daytona. First new car. 2.5L with a 5 speed transmission. Loved that car.
1987 F150. Needed a pickup.
1989 F150 Super cab. Real bummer.
1992 F150. Poop brown but a good truck.
1999 Dodge 1500 Quad cab 4x4 with a 360 V8. Most powerful truck I've ever owned( ex got that one in the divorce).
2001 Dodge 1500 2wd V6. Couldn't get out of it's own way!
2002 Ford F150 4x4 with 4.9l V8. I'd still have this one if it hadn't been so abused before I got it. Still got 165K miles out of it.
2004 Dodge Durango. Huge dissapointment.
2008 Wrangler Unlimited. Best vehicle I've had since my '79 CJ!

Those are great cars, the first "real" 2 dr sports sedan/coupe (4 seater that wasn't just a 2+2), the ti/tii being the ultimate expression...and the "toots" as we called them probably the car BMW had in mind when it started their "Ultimate Driving Machine" slogan. That and the CS (6 cyl) 3.0 coupes. Friend had both, we turned into project cars, fixing up with Recaros, Bilstein sports, BBSs, Michelin XWXs or some such, A/C upgrade, paint refresh (Alpine silver on one a Fjord blue on the other IIRC) etc. They really did love to be run hard--the more the better.

The 2002 was also likely the inspiration for the "poor man's BMW" - the early 70s Datsun 510, which was also a real stitch to drive. Willing 1.6-2.0 motors, indy rear end not found on other econo cars, etc. (A light car with notoriously thin sheetmetal to help it go fast!)
