OT- Tsunami hitting here in under 4 hours.

Post by Ji in Hawaii »

8.9 earthquake in Japan generating an estimate 6 feet rise in sea level here. Sirens now blazing. Tsunami going to hit here in a tad under 4 hours. My house 3 feet above sea level with river in back yard a mile from beach. Civil defense says we should be safe, hope they are correct. Keep me in your prayers.

Find your water filter and keep it handy.

Lessee, a good hank of rope and a couple of your beautiful pig stickers might come in handy.

Be safe friend.

I just learned that the British have issued a tsunami warning to their citizens all over the Pacific, clear down to Colombia and Peru. If Hawaii is looking at 6 feet of increase in sea level, what would that translate clear over here? Six inches?

Anyway, take care Ji. Prayers up for you and the rest who are in harm's way.

Small surges are causing damage to boats along the CA coastline, particularly in Monterey Bay. Small craft have broken loose from moorings and have been floating around the harbor in Santa Cruz. There are also surge reports from Ft. Bragg and Eureka, but so far no tsunami.

Aloha guys. I stayed up until the danger had passed so about 4:30 a.m. local time keeping watch just in case civil defense was mistaken, and we needed to evacuate quickly. I went out to my backyard pier at zero hour and saw surges moving swiftly upstream when tide should have been going out. Fortunately the level rose only a couple feet. I am on the east coast of O'ahu island and it seems that most of the damage was along the more exposed north shores of all islands with 6 to 7 feet rise in water level reported at Haleiwa Harbor, O'ahu, Hilo Bay, Hawai'i, and Kahului Harbor, Maui. There was damage reported along other coastal areas to boats in the harbors but fortunately no loss of life. Thank you for keeping me in your thoughts. Things could have been allot worse. I was wondering which guns I should grab if the water level started rising. I realized I have too many guns. The saltwater would have wrecked havoc on them but bottom line they are only material things. Rambling thoughts from a exhausted mind.

I just got some bad news. I have a cousin in Japan who retired to Sendai, Japan (straight in from epicenter of quake, and major center of quake and tsunami damage) 3 years ago. All roads, trains, telephone cut off to the area and no one has heard from him nor can contact since the disaster.

Very sorry to hear that Ji. A friend of mine said that he was able to get in touch with cousins that DROVE out to check on an uncle and that is how they know he is fine but that they can't get news on many of their other friends and family. So, we will keep a good thought and prayer knowing that you are worried for him.

Over 10,000 unaccounted for in northeast Japan

In Friday's major earthquake and tsunamis, 689 people have been confirmed dead in eastern Japan. The death toll will exceed 1,000, as hundreds of bodies are still unidentified in Miyagi and Iwate prefectures. On top of that, more than 10,000 people in several prefectures have not been in contact with anyone.

In the coastal town of Minami-sanriku in Miyagi Prefecture, about 10,000 people have not been in contact. That is more than half the town's population of 17,000. Most of the town's buildings have been washed away by a tsunami, though a hospital and several other concrete structures are still standing.

In Miyagi Prefecture, 178 people have been confirmed dead. The death toll in the prefecture could exceed 500 as hundreds of bodies are still unidentified.
On a beach in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture's main city, 200 to 300 unidentified bodies have been found. It is believed they were swept away by a tsunami. Police have not yet confirmed the number. About 100 bodies in each of 2 other cities in the prefecture have been carried into gymnasiums for identification.

In neighboring Iwate Prefecture, 258 people have been confirmed dead and the death toll will rise above 500. The city of Rikuzen-takata has been devastated by a tsunami. The Self-Defense Forces say they have found 300 to 400 bodies there.
