Marlin 1895XLR 45-70

Post by AkHunter45-70 »

Well Happy Birthay to me!! I was getting ready to buy an XLR for my birthday and was told by the wife not to buy one. I asked why, she says......because I already bought one for you and it should be here sometime this weekend, early next week. Then my good friend Marc Taylor tells me he has a box of 420 grain Garrett Hammerheads for me. So it's finally happened and a little sooner than I expected, I am stoked! I have some mods to do to it but it looks like i'll be using it for my brown bear hunt this spring. Did I mention that I am stoked??? I'm a lucky guy to have a wife that would do this for me and to have a friend that is willing to help me out too. As you can see, i'm just a little excited about all this... :D

Do not know about the XLR's , but the " regular " Marlin .45-70's are a hoot to shoot ! :-)

You will like the XLR. Mine would group 1.25" @ 100yds, open sights , using WW 300gr ammo, after firing a couple of fouling shots before firing for group.

Sight selection

Post by AkHunter45-70 »

Could use a little help with choosing a good sight. I was tossing the idea of putting a low power Leupy scope on or the WWG sights. Leaning more towards the open sights but i'd like to hear from those that use either one. Thanks for the BD wishes guys.

I'd recommend a low power Leupold, they make a 1-4 VXI with a heavy duplex and I recently purchased a Leupold European model in 1.25-4 30mm with German #4 reticle that I really like, it's a VERY nice scope. Good luck and happy B-day!

Happy Birthday, I am looking forward to your pics of a successful spring brown bear hunt. Good luck with your new gun.

You could go both ways if you want. XS sights has a rail system that you can have a ghost ring peep, and a scope mounted on it. Just use quick detach rings, take the scope off, and use the peep in a tight situation. Heres the link to take a look....http://www.xssights.com/

Happy Birthday AKHunter.

I think that you will be very happy with your gift. I don't have an XLR but I have two other .45-70s (1895GS and 1895LTD-V) and a .410 and they are great guns.

If it were me, and I were going to scope it I would try one of the Leupold compact 2.5-7 power VXIIIs. I would like that scout set up too with keeping the iron sights too. It is nice to have choices.
