OT - what are these ?Japanese? police carrying...?

Post by AJMD429 »

I saw this picture on http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/as_earthquake_tsunami_glance, and there was no caption (pic 33 of 44 on the 'photos' section), but it appeared to be Japanese law enforcement or military patrolling in the aftermath of the earthquake.

Are these U.S. M-16 type guns?

The one on the left looks like an HK G36 (or variant) and the one on the right is an M4 variant of some sort.

Can't see the buttstock, but the one in the front looks like a shorty M-16ish type weapon, but the one being carried by the guy farther back has me perplexed. It has no butt stock for the spring, even a collapsible one, so that one must be something different. Barrel doesn't look right on the rear one either for an M-16. I lost interest in most black guns in the 90's and just like cars I have not kept up with the latest trends.

Interesting. I thought they didn't need guns in Japan...

Do you feel like fending off Godzilla with a wakizashi?

True, there's not a whole lot of gun violence in Japan AFAIK but they do have the Yakuza and possibly the Triads to deal with. The almost total inability to buy firearms over there (even for the elite I believe) led to the hyper-realistic Airsoft replicas.

Chalk it up to the fruits of a mis-spent youth. Most kids could quote sports stats, I knew weapons and history. I'm actually into sports now but not much else has changed...

Yep, I know that of which you speak. More modern guns seemed to lose their "soul" for me about 1996, and I've gone totally backwards toward my first loves: flintlocks, levers, SA's, Doubles. Still pretty much stuck in the past.

While I doubt that's what's in play here, just FYI there are some AR-15 variants these days that do away with the buffer/spring combo. For example:
