Gunshow Highway Robbery--Nice Long Story!

Post by Sixgun »

Fellow Guncranks,
The Good Lord has blessed me. :D I attended one of the best antique gunshows today (Sunnybrook Ballroom, Pottstown, Pa.) and after walking the aisles for 3 hours I decided to take a break and sit outside. I was a little burned up when my buddy Gary come running up to me with an 1873 in 38-40 (made in 1889) and screams in my face, "Lookee what I stole for $2200". Absolutely beautiful octagon barreled rifle with 95% bright blue and perfect wood. That was a screamin' bargain :D He says to me, "Find anything worthwhile?" I said, "Just overpriced junk, lets go home"

Lots of neat stuff. Rock Island Auction had a preview of some of their guns that were going for auction next month. In there I saw a deluxe pistol gripped 1886 carbine in 50-110. Looked about new. Pre-auction estimate--$75,000-$125,000. Or a deluxe 1876 in 45-75, also in about new condition with an estimate of $40,000-$60,000. Many other fine condition leverguns including nice Henry's and single action Colts in the $10,000 to $150,000 range. I figured that with a fork-lift drivers paycheck, I might as well skip that auction. :D

So..................back to sitting outside. I was alone at this time when this guy comes walking out of the gunshow with his head down holding a Colt Lightning. I says, "Whats the matter bud?" He says, "I can't get my price for this rifle and everyone looked at it." I says, "Gimme a look see". Here is this Colt Lightning in 44-40 that looked like it was shot about 10 boxes of shells out of it. Nice sharp lines, excellent bore, super wood, nice sharp Rampant Colt on the side of the receiver, excellent barrel lettering, but...................the blue on the receiver either flaked off or somehow dissapeared. It might have been a possible special order nickel plated receiver that the nickel flaked off but the factory letter that also came with the gun does not show that. It was priced about right (18). I looked at it some more and shelled out the bucks. Then he tells me he has another rifle out in the car, so I walked out with him.

We get out to the car and he pulls out this monstrosity of a rifle. Its an 1881 Marlin in 40-60. (same as 40-65 Winchester) The whole thing is covered with a light coat of rust. Here my little brain determines its only light rust that will EASILY come off. Then................I really start looking at it.................This rifle is hardly used at all. The bore was bright and shiney, excellent wood, no metal pits, sharp mechanics and an original Lyman tang sight. I look at the serial number and see that its number is only 2,000 higher than the first numbers recorded! Made in 1883. The first couple of months production. :D This Marlin is the heavy receiver version with a 30" HEAVY OCTAGON BARREL. :D When I got home I put it on the scale--------12 POUNDS. price? The guy says because of all of the rust, he will take $800 for it. :D I wet and soiled my shorts on the spot. :D

O.K., Back to the Colt Lightning---------SERIAL NUMBER 58 Thats right "FIFTY EIGHT" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D After the seller and I parted ways, I walked back to the show and a small crowd surrounded me as I was telling them about the low serial number. Then some of the dealers came outside when they heard the commotion and looked AGAIN at this Colt. EVERYONE ONE OF THEM COULD NOT BELIEVE HOW STUPID THEY WERE FOR NOT NOTICING THE SERIAL NUMBER!! And this gun was in a LOT of hands before it saw me. Like I said, I was blessed. Last night my daughter locked her keys in her car and while I'm pretty good at breaking into things, I could not get into this car (Mit. Eclipse) While I did jump on her poop a little for not keeping an extra key, I paid for a guy to come out to the house to get into it and did not ask my daughter to repay me. (Besides, if I did, my Italian wife would bust me upside of the head) The Good Lord took care of me for my good deed. :D

My buddy Gary and I sang all of the way home. :D When I did get home I had to change my underpants. They were so messy I threw them away. :D :D My buddy Gary did get a bit upset because the stuff went through my pants and onto the seat of his new Ford pick-up truck. He also made me keep the window rolled down :D

Oh well, the money I had saved up for the new Colt AR in .308 with new scope is gone now. Big deal, I'm so happy with these new/old lever/pump guns, I could care less as finds like this happen about three times in a lifetime. :D

Colt Lightning in 44 W.C.F.-------As soon as I got home I shot 5 rounds out of it. 1 and 1/2" at 50 yards :D

Slap me silly! You ought to be arrested and thrown into the slammer! I am so green I could hide in the produce bin and no one would see me. What a couple of finds .... And your buddy's 1873 too.

Thanks a lot guys. :D Sometimes when you find good stuff, it makes all the time and effort you put into these things worthwhile. Today everything came together---the guns--other people not noticing--and the rarity of me holding so much dough. Well, I did have to borrow a few hundred off my buddy Gary. AFTER Gary gave me the bucks, I told him not to hold his breath waiting to get his money back. :D :D Ha! I sure am a nice guy.

Congratulations Jack. Are you going to add the Marlin to your silhouette battery? With that 30" barrel you might have to put some counter weights in your back pocket. ;-)

They all go to the "shooting battery". The Lightning has already been shot. The Marlin would be cool to try out at silhouette and it will. I tried some preliminary tests on it last night but the won't accept a standard 40-65 round. It sticks at the base and after fixing a single case to eliminate that problem, the chamber will only accept a .407 bullet. A groove diameter check shows it to be .408. Luckily I have a custom inside neck reamer that I use on a 40-82 Hi-Wall that is the exact size I need :D

I'll find something around here today to take a thou. off the base, whether I make a die or just spin 'em on a drill press. Either way, its an easy fix. Stay tuned, its a rainy day here in Pa. and the entire day is going to be devoted to playing with my new toys. :D

Off the subject, some guys at work tell me (sometimes nasty) that I have never grown up. I tell them they are unhappy miserable excuses for human beings as the Good Lord gives us one life on this Earth and I don't plan to waste a single moment experiencing mindless entertainment such as TV or sports. I play with guns!!! :D :D -------------------Sixgun

Great to see that there still are bargains at gunshows. Too bad about the receiver on the Colt, pretty much makes it a shooter grade.

Kid--It was "devine intervention". You can talk to anybody at the show and they all know the story. I saw guys kicking themselves mumbling, " I can't believe I had that in my hands and let it go. " And here, I was outside enjoying the sunshine and warm air when this dude comes walking by. :D

This show was no average show. The dealers all have coats and ties. Classy place like the Cody show or Timonium Md. show. Everyone knows their stuff. ------------Sixgun

A story to warm my heart, Jack. Good karma makes for great results. I find it impossible to believe that nobody who handled that beautiful Lightning saw the serial number. That's the FIRST thing I look at when eyeballing out a gun. What, are Eastern collectors asleep at the wheel? :)

Great finds. And, you gave the seller what he wanted. Due to the low serial numbers, maybe he could have got more out of them somewhere else, but those folks inside just plain made a mistake. Hope you have a lot of fun with both rifles.

It never ceases to amaze me some of the stuff that surfaces at gunshows in PA !

But the really amazing thing is that NEITHER of these seem to have been grandpa'd !

Alot of the nice old guns I've seen in PA had been handed down for generations and had been changed to suit the times . So many nice old pieces I saw were kinda far from original !

But these two seem to be very very nice !

Congrats !

Great job, Sixgun. I would have enjoyed showing my finds off to knowledgeable people who should have known better too. I'm so ignorant about old rifles though that I would have walked right by these rifles, and I've probably walked by tables full of them without a second glance while trying to scope out interesting revolvers. Your story is nicely written too. I think any one of your old high school English teachers would have given you about a 92% on it.

Now Jack, I think you should sell me that marlin for what you have in it and here is my reasoning! I was supposed to go to that show but being the kind hearted son and Grandson that I am I decided to take my old Momma, who had a hip replacement in January, down to Newport News Va, to see my 92 year old WWII vet Grandfather instead. You see I should rightfully be the owner of that Marlin anyway, but because I was doing such a good deed I wasn't able to attend so I am sure the wonders of the universe saw to it that you got so I could eventually have it after you sold it to me for what you got it for ..RIGHT?????
Didn't think so But I tried. Nice pickup on the lightening number and beautiful Marlin. Tom

Marlinman,
After the excitement wore down a bit, I was able to get a real good look-see on the Colt. There is blue in the hidden areas such as where the frame meets the barrel, inside of the trigger guard and in the nooks and crannies. So.....if anyone decided to take the blue off, they would not have missed these areas, especially behind the trigger guard, where it is very noticeable. The stamped "rampant Colt" on the left side of the receiver is very sharp and clear. Excellent wood to metal fit. Its a very nice condition Lightning with good tight lock-up.

The barrel is definitely original blue. The markings look like they were stamped on yesterday. Nice crown and barrel face.

I've been working cleaning up the 1881 marlin. Its a heavy receiver, second variation with a 30" #4 barrel of which 780 were made (according to Brophy) Groove diameter slugs out at .408 but the chamber will only take a .406 bullet. I'll work on that with an inside neck reamer I have for a 40-82 that had the same problem. Sometimes, a little push with the loaded round into a FLS will also do the trick.------------Sixgun

Guys,
Thanks big time for the kind and neat remarks. As a Winchester, Colt and old gun collector for the last near 40 years, I have only been this excited about a find a few times. (they were nice 1886's)

There's more to the story and I did not to clog it up in my original post. I SAW THAT 1881 MARLIN IN 1974 AND IT WAS A RIFLE THAT CEMENTED ME TO THE OLD LEVERGUN ADDICTION. :D :D :D :D Its hard to believe that 35+ years later, a million to one chance, and that rifle was mine. Thats why I said earlier I must have been blessed and that the find was "devine intervention" :D

The young man who was walking the Lightning around was the son of an older friend of my brother-in-law whom I knew a bit but not real good. We all hunted together a few times in the early seventies. (this gets really weird--listen) When my brother-in-law (who is 15 years older than me) took me over to this house in 1974 or 5, there was a new baby in the house that just came home---THIS WAS THE YOUNG MAN WHO SOLD ME THE RIFLES!! His dad died a few years ago. TALK ABOUT FATE!! While there, the father showed me his gun collection in the basement and that Marlin really stood out. Funny thing, it was rusty then too. I do not recall seeing the Lightning, but then again, there was at least a hundred guns allover the place. This guy was not overly organized and to be blunt, he just did not care about the condition.

After bs'en for a while, this young man took a good look at me and say's, "I know you". Then I said the same thing to him as I saw him in the area in which we live a few times. After exchanging names, I told him, "The last time I saw you, you were just a little baby.

WAIT--IT GETS BETTER-------I did not even know the gunshow was going to happen. I happened to be online Friday night when my buddy Gary e-mails me and says, "You going to the show?" I asked him, "Where, there ain't no show tomorrow". So I go to bed and get 6 hours of sleep and hit the show. I was never planning on going and Gary has not called me about a show in the last year.

This has been the strangest thing that has happened to me--maybe the strangest thing EVER. I'm having a hard time getting my thoughts right so my words might be a bit jumbled. Its just so weird that so many things happened that steered those guns my way. Dunno, dunno----------------Sixgun

Speaking of serial number for Colt Lightnings, where can you look those up? We got a 44 Colt lightning up in the attic that went thru a flood, and I've always wondered when it was made. If I recall correctly, the serial number is around 10,000. One of these days I'm going to climb up in the attic and get that rifle down. It would be nice to know how to date it.

Southfork,
Colt started shipping the Lightning in Jan., 1884. Mine is dated as shipped Jan 21, 1884. There were a total of about 90,000 made from 1884-1902. Serial # 12226 started the year 1886, so yours was made towards the end of 1885.

Ooohhh. I shot the 1881 marlin today with 5 rounds of ammo loaded up with 7 grains of Unique and a 275 gr. bullet. (in the back yard--gotta keep the loads low) As the gun is all apart for cleaning, I only had the barreled action and the buttstock together. 5 shots @ 50 yards=1 and 1/8" with 3 in one hole. This is gonna be good. :D ---------------Sixgun
