Home made matchlock rifle.
Disclaimer, all guns shown that are home made are not for sale or intended as instruction of how to build a firearm or copied.
All guns or materials should be checked by a qualified gunsmith before using.
I built this matchlock rifle a few years ago, it has a green mountain 54 cal. barrel, made everything else of my own design including auto opening pan cover.
Also a link to a hunting story using it to bag a white tail.

And a 50 cal matchlock pistol with a bayonet made from scratch.

Dang, Pitchy, that's real crafty! And those are some nice pictures: thanks for sharing that. This certainly makes me extra appreciative of these new-fangled center-fire primers we've got nowdays!

OK, I'm officially humbled and bow to a superior ability.
I've never seen a working match lock. That action is so simple yet effective I'd love to see it work in person.
Really cool.

See Disclaimer at top of this thread.
The first guns were called hand gonnes, they were basically a barrel on a stick and pointed by holding under ones arm and set off with match (burning rope) or a hot wire.
Later on they came up with a lever called a serpentine to hold the match and put a pan on them.
Then they really progressed and put the barrel on a chunk of wood and it even had sights, these were called wall guns. The would hook the metal bar under the barrel on the edge of the castle wall aim and fire thus the wall took the recoil.
This model they still hadn`t figured out that ya should shoulder the gun but put the stock on top of your shoulder.
They eventually figured it out and this model was shouldered, had a serpintine and sights.

In the words of Arte Johnson, Veerrry Interesting!
Nice work Pitchy. I have thought many times of making rimfire version of the Sharps rifles. I am a bit more encouraged seeing this.
