Been / am bad sick

Post by J Miller »

Last Thursday I got up feeling really funny. Not the ha ha type of funny, but wrong funny. I staggered into the bathroom and suddenly got that horrid feeling I was going to vomit. Dry heaves, then more dry heaves then then diarrhea hit. Then while sitting on the pot with it coming out of the bottom end more vomiting. What to do, can't turn around to use the pot .... oh well the bath tub got it.

Four days of fever, joint pains, diarrhea; I was useless. Spent most of the week end in bed just getting up enough to get to the pot. Saturday I started with Pepto Bizmol. Yuck, that stuff made me nauseous. But it seemed to slow the diarrhea down.

By Sunday my bowels large and small were inflamed and swollen. Hemorrhoids begging for relief. I took two Anti-Diarrheal pills and passed out again.
I've slept most of the last 4 days away. Fever dreams drove me crazy when I was asleep, screaming headaches worked me over when I was awake.

Finally Sunday night things started to calm down. I was able to get some Power Aid drank and some water and a half bowl of chicken noodle soup. Didn't loose any of it.

I woke up this morning with a screamer headache and wondered if maybe that was because I hadn't been able to take my blood pressure meds for the last 2 or 3 days. Got them down, and sure enough in a bout a half hour the headache subsided.

I was going to the gunsmith with the Marlin today. Ain't gonna happen. I couldn't drive that far (45 + miles one way ) right now and as sick as I still am I'd probably end up with pneumonia.
I'll call him later and set up another time.

The worst thing is, Genies fighting the same thing. It hit her last Monday. She lost two days of work before somehow making it in. She makes me look like a weakling.

I'm going back to bed.

Joe

Sounds like food poisoning. Keep up the Pepto. If you can get out, get the cherry flavored chewables as they don't cause people to be nauseated as badly. Break them up and then take a drink of gatorade, put the broken tablets in your mouth, and swallow quickly with more gatorade.

Hope you get to feeling better soon! Better keep pushing fluids, sounds like your nausea and headaches are from dehydration. I would take a trip to the DR and get a bag of fluids pushed in me. DR visits are expensive, but seem to be a bit cheaper than an Emergency Room visit!

Sounds horrible! Egads. Well, obviously prayers for you guys up. I think I'll get a flu shot when I get back from this trip. I've been in your boots and I HATE IT.

Be careful about dehydration! Hard to get well when your body is all messed up on that front.

Best,

That sound like the "Winter vomit disease" which comes mostly every winter here in Scandinavia. It is indeed not fun, but luckily the infection only lasts a few days. My wife had it in the weekend, but today she is already nearly recovered. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norovirus

Hopely you're fine again tomorrow or at Wednesday - best wishes!

I had something similar last Oct. when it had almost run it's course a friend of mine suggested I do as the Apostle Paul told Timothy, have a little wine for thy stomach's sake. I don't drink but I got some red wine and tried sipping a little. Before long I was feeling much better.

Sad to hear about you and Genie.

On Wed. I felt a flu coming on that my nephew passed on to me. Friday I felt like a piece of crud but no intestinal issues. Yesterday and today feeling halfway normal but I can feel that it hasn't left yet. I'd love it if I could sleep during the day.

Hoping for a quick and complete recovery for you both.

Horsesoldier,
The clinic we go to is impossible to get in to see a DR or a Nurse Prac without an appointment. If it's serious enough you need to see a DR they tell you to go to the ER. Other than routine blood pressure and other necessary tests this clinic is worthless. I have been consuming as much liquids as I can pour down. But until yesterday it was flowing straight through in about 30 seconds. Now that the back door trots have stopped I'm drinking as much as I can without bloating myself.
A couple days ago however I was contemplating dialing 911 and waiting for the EMTs.

Piller,
Wife and I thought about that. We both eat the same stuff and this hit her four or five days before it hit me. I'm a tough old goat but when something has messed with my stomach it's never waited to turn into diarrhea (another word I've had to learn to spell) and come out.
I think a flu bug is most likely. Wife's co-workers have all been sick with this too.
I'll remember those chewable Peptos.

Perry,
I appreciate the prayers and suggestions. I'm not stubborn about going to the DR, just can't get in to see them. See first post above.

I'm still running a fever though. I checked it about 35 minutes ago and was running 100.9º.

Thanks

Well, I "think" I might survive this ... maybe. The fever broke mid afternoon, was like a whoosh of relief came over my body. The sweats stopped and I said ........ ahhhhh that feels good.

Now my insides are gurgling, hope the diarrhea doesn't come back.

We think that with the viral infections (i.e. the Norwalk virus others mentioned earlier, or others we collectively call 'stomach flu', somehow hoping to differentiate them from the real influenza and from bacterial or parasitic gastroenteritis), part of the way your body kills them off is to run a fever. Thus, 'fever' in and of itself isn't always something one needs to treat, as it may actually slow the recovery. Unfortunately, fever ALSO causes dehydration unless you can keep fluids down, and delerium, which makes telling exactly how a person is feeling, what hurts, etc., difficult (if they can't answer your questions accurately).

J Miller wrote:The clinic we go to is impossible to get in to see a DR or a Nurse Prac without an appointment. If it's serious enough you need to see a DR they tell you to go to the ER. Other than routine blood pressure and other necessary tests this clinic is worthless.
Joe, you must surely be mistaken - my well educated peers who advocate socialized healthcare out of the pure goodness of their heart (not to mention the lucrative contracts they latch on to), tell me how 'superior' government-run healthcare is. They say that the 'secret' to good primary care is to make sure the nurse practitioners are offered at least $65,000 a year for a 40-hour week, and that the family physicians 'supervising' them must make a base pay of no more than $75,000 a year for a 50-hour week, with bonus incentives if they prescribe the proper medications and treatments which enable the most profits for the HMO or hospital, so they may be able to make twice that if they do "the right thing" (as long as the 'right thing' benefits the 'system' rather than the patient)...

The 'old way' of allowing the doctor to charge what patients were willing/able to pay, giving discounted or free care when the physician thought it was appropriate, and doing what was practical, vs. what was 'reimbursed well', are all wrong - after all, who are these 'patients' to judge what doctors are good and what ones aren't, and which ones are worth the money and which ones aren't - ONLY government should do that...

Socialism so totally SUCKS; the Baby Boomers chickens are coming home to roost... Problem is - not all of us 'Boomers' bought into the era of materialism and irresponsibility the way our socialist peers did... [/rant off]

AJMD,

The thing is, the MDs are generally very good. It's just the clinics procedures and their overbooking that prevents non emergency visits without an apointment.

I agree with your comment that socialized medicine sucks.

Don't know if you have them there, but we have express care or something of the sort, it's a walk-in clinic, first come, first serve. I even go there for stitches, bleeding, etc, and just hang out til they get me in. It's rarely long. I never go to the ER unless the clinic is closed and I HAVE to go right then. For broken bones, I still prefer to wait a day or two to see if it's really broken or whatever. :D

Heckofalot cheaper than the ER also.

I wouldn't say this had I not owned livestock of various types over the years, but I think I'd take a veterinarian's advice regarding a human patient long before I'd go very far along the path of having a M.D. treat my livestock.

Went to bed around 10:30 ish last night. Right after Castle. Felt like I could relax and sleep for a change. Boy howdy was I wrong. About an hour later I woke up drenched in sweat. I had to change clothes. Since then, almost 8 hours, I've not been able to sleep at all. Just lay there.
First I fought the chills. Put on another shirt and my woolie socks. That helped. Then I added more covers that helped.
Then later I threw off the covers and got cold again.

Finally a little while ago I said; "to hell with it, just get up." At some point I'll crater and get some sleep until then if my posts sound demented you know why.

Joe

PS: Speaking of Castle, we gotta get rid of Becket's boy friend. He's messing up the works.

I would second that, for the same reason, and have found it to be helpful. It sounds like you and the wife ate something you shouldn't have. Drink lots of water, and when it is all over, eat some yogurt to get the good bacteria count back up to snuff.

I'm not sure what hit us. I've kicked the diarrhea part but I keep having waves of chills and light headed dizzies. It's as if I went from the flu to a sinus infection.

As for the yogurt that don't sound too bad of an idea. I've got some acidophilus here too.

Found out that a patient who had a bad persistent cause and is in Mexico was taken to the hospital and has lapsed into a coma. They apparently are not sure what is wrong according to her brother who stopped in to let us know about the situation. Very healthy active woman in her 40s when last I saw here a few months ago so there may be something very virulent around. AJ would likely know better.

One of my wife's co-workers daughter cleans a Dr's office and he told her he saw over 30 cases of this in the last couple days alone. And she says he referrer to it as a virus.
Whatever it is is really hammering this area. Because my wife is out in it, I really hope she doesn't get it again. If so we'll both end up in the ER.
