I am in the market for a 45-70 lever and was wanting some input from y'all. What I want is basically a Marlin 1895 cowboy but with a 20" bbl instead of the standard 26", full length magazine, straight grip, and maybe even a large loop.
What do y'all think? Not going to be shooting long range, just max 100 yds. I just want a 45-70 lever.
Thanks,
kenken
Anyone have 45-70 info?

I think the "standard 26" length" harkens back to the black powder days . Smokeless powder burns faster. I want to cut my 1886 src. to 20" for handling and weight savings. With Leverrevoultions and 20" barrels i don't see why you coudn't have a 200 yard North American Big game rifle

The 1895 LTD-III has an 18.5" octagonal barrel, straight grip. It's about the nicest modern Marlin. It might be cheaper and easier to find a Cowboy to chop; but shoot it first, you might like a LOT the way it is.

I also prefer 20" in general, but honestly can't see the difference between my 18.5" GS and a 20" barrel... though I would like a little longer mag tube...

For me, it has to have a straight grip and a full length mag tube. It just don't look right, to me, without it. Just a personal preference. A buddy of mine has the 26" version and it is 'long'. Too much for me.
