OT - New rimfire shooter

Post by bsaride »

Took a gal, that my brother has been trying to set me up with, to the indoor
range tonight. Never shot anything before and deathly afraid of handguns
(she works at the county courthouse). all shooting done at about 7 yards.

Started her with a 22 single shot rifle, seated, rested forend. Then moved
her up to the Marlin 39A I bought from Mic, same as before. Then had her
shoot the evil black rifle (scoped, bipoded Savage 93 in 17 HMR) that everyone
just loves to shoot. Took her off the 6 inch bull and had her aim at a 1/2 inch
dot (group was "dot " size). Asked her what she wanted to shoot. Pointed
to that evil black rifle with a grin. Had her try the 4 inch S&W 18 (1959)
with the Fuzzy Farant grips, jumped at the first shot, but stuck to her guns
and after she recovered, picked it up again and I had her shoot some more
(all single action). Then I told her to just pull the trigger. First shot went
high but then she got into it. She had a good time and didn't cause any
damage other than some targets with holes in them (she thought she would
be a dangerous newbie before getting there). Overall an excellent starting
point with decent shooting (she even called a few of her shots).

Probaby being around too many guvmint and administrative types who don't care for self-sufficient citizens who could get onery if pushed around too much.

bsaride, glad you did the RIGHT thing and started off gently and with .22 LR's - too many guys think it's 'funny' to take a newbie and hand them something big enough to make them flinch, like they're trying to impress them that 'we' can handle all this noise and power, but 'they' are just a newbie who will never amount to anything in the world of firearms shooting.

I think AJMD429 has the right answer on the courthouse part.

No pics taken because this range is at a gunsmiths who caters to LEO's,
They don't allow picture taking because there may be an undercover
officer there as well.
