Marlin 39A and Vernier type sight.

Post by j23 »

I have a Marlin 39A.. older model, probably 70's or 80's. I would like to mount a Vernier style tang sight to it. Not for any reason in particular (I know a Marbles or Lyman would do the trick, but I just enjoy being different!)

Question is, can I?!

I was thinking of either the mid range model from Track of the Wolf:

..or this one from gun-parts.com (about half way down the page, on the left..)

Aside from having to drill a hole or two in the tang, is it feasable?

Thanks alot!

Sure it's feasible, I know several shooters who have a setup similar to that. Frankly, they spent quite a bit more for theirs, go to Montana Vintage Arms or Brownell's for some different ideas. Be sure you get one with windage adjustments, some of them dont, the ones with the click adjustment windage knobs are best.

This one will work fine and is less expensive.

Marlins of that vintage had the serial number on the tang.
Be careful not to deface it when you drill.

Do they have any type of windage adjustment?

The major problem with the sight offered by Track of the Wolf is that when you adjust for windage, the staff tilts (right or left) and a correction to the eye cup height cup will be necessary. I once had a rifle that had such a sight and it was a PITA.

Best to purchase a sight that has windage built in by adjusting either: (a) loosening the eye cup which moves side-to-side in an elongated hole; or, windage in the base, which moves the staff without altering the eye cup height -- sometimes called a “Soule” sight.

Looking at the sight from gun-parts-com., it does not appear to have any windage.

The extra elevation-adjustment range those sights have would enable you to shoot pretty long distances with subsonic .22 LR ammunition and be pretty accurate. Think of it as a scaled-down .45-70 buffalo gun shooting 1/10th the bullet weight at 1/3 the ranges.

The high-velocity stuff transitions to subsonic around 100 yards and tumbles, though.

j23, does your need to be different enclude drilling a hole in the tang of your Marlin 39A? Pretty irreversible but, to each his or her own? Don't think you'll get much in resale value. Older model 39As will accept the Williams sight without modication.
