Got brass rod?

Post by jnyork »

For a gun project, I need a piece of brass rod, 3/16 or 1/8, about 4" long. I have been to Lowe's and HD, when I ask all I get is a blank stare. Anyone have any ideas where I could look? Thanks

I just bought a brass rod at Ace Hardware in New Mexico at Christmas. Only place in town that I could find any.

What shooter said - go to a hardware store and they should have it.

You might want to check out Buffalo Arms, Track Of The Wolf or Dixie Gun Works or search on any other muzzleloading supplies websites. It's common for some guys to use solid brass range rods for their "old timer" rifles.

If weight is an issue, my twin once made a servicable but light-weight range rod using several different diameter brass tubes, inside of one another. I think he used wraps of black electrical tape to keep the spacing between the tubes correct. This way, he had the look and benefit of brass -- but without all the weight. I think he also had a wooden dowel as the center core for some added strength too.

Hope this helps!

Ace Hardware ... as previously mentioned. I bought a piece recently to remove a 5mm RRM case stuck in the chamber of a Remington 592 rifle.

Check your local welding supply store for brazing rod. You might be supprised how large you can get there, usually 30" or 3', can't rmember which.

Farm supply stores like Tractor Supply, Atwood's, Orscheln, Murdoch's might have it.
You might even try Michael's or Hobby Lobby. I don't know if such a thing exists as a local hobby shop (remote cars or airplanes.) They used to have metal and wood stock in supply.

+1 on Ace Hardware having it. In the welding supply section of my local ACE they have brazing rod of almost any thickness you want. It is all 3 ft long.

The Pretenders, late 70s, into the 80s. Chrissie Hynde is the lead vocalist.

The unthreaded part of a bolt makes a good rod.

Go to a hobby shop that works with RC airplanes and the like. You can get a piece of 3/16" brass rod for a buck or two. I got one to raise the sight on my Henry H001 to use with a peep sight before I switched to a receiver mounted one.
