Re: Winchester 94 Trapper years made
okanagan hiker wrote:Hello all...
Does anyone know, or know where I can find out -
1) What year was the 94 first made as a Trapper model? Not sure, but early 1900s saw several "Trappers" with barrels as short as 12-13" produced. That I know of, it was not an official model designation.
2) Since that year ( above ), was it made every year? No.
3) Way the Trapper ever offered in 44 Magnum? Only in the 16" AE versions
4) What was the first year for 44 Magnum in a Winchester 94? 1969
Thanks in advance

A few further questions...
1) What do you all think of the 94 in 44 Magnum.... does it feed ok?
2) How hard is it to find a Trapper model?
3) Effects on a 30-30 of cutting 4 inches off the barrel ( muzzle blast, etc )?
4) I assume it costs a couple of hundred to cut down a 20" to 16"... doesn't seem worth it to me... unless Trappers a a bunch more expensive than the 20" versions.
Thanks

1) I don't know about the .44 Mag, but my 45 Colt AE Trapper feeds just about everything up to C.O.A.L. of 1.75".
2) Around here ( Central IL ) I never see them.
3) You'll loose a bit of velocity, pick up a bit of handiness, and increase the muzzle blast significantly. Depending on the bullet weight and type of powder you can also end up with a tremendously huge fire ball out them.
4) I wouldn't pay any where near that much to have a carbine chopped into a Trapper. Not worth it to me. The Trappers are out there, you just gotta search for them.
Sorry I know you asked Griff, but I got here first. Ha Ha.

The other issue is nose shape; I'd recommend a round flat nose vs. any semi- or wadcutters.J Miller wrote:1) I don't know about the .44 Mag, but my 45 Colt AE Trapper feeds just about everything up to C.O.A.L. of 1.75".okanagan hiker wrote:Thanks for the info, Griff.

Keep you eye out on Gunbroker, Gunsamerica or others.2) Around here ( Central IL ) I never see them.

I've never had a lever gun in 44 Mag. Being a .45 Colt fanatic that's what I got.
However I guess I'm lucky or something, but my 94 AE will feed Keith SWCs all day long. No snags, no hitches in the giddy up or nothing. It doesn't know the difference between Keiths, generic stumpy swcs, and rnfps.
My Marlin 1894 is the same.
Now the Rossi I had wouldn't even feed standard factory rn ammo when I got it. I had to send it back to the factory warranty center just to get it so it would work. While there I had the smith alter it a bit so it would feed Keith bullet loads too.
These things are lots of fun. When they work right.

The first Model 1894 "trapper" made was April 23, 1897 (15" barrel).

You could order them up to 1934 (National Firearms Act of 1934).
3) Way the Trapper ever offered in 44 Magnum?
Yes, first year for them was 1986.
4) What was the first year for 44 Magnum in a Winchester 94?
1967

44 trappers
I had one - fed very well surprisingly enough - though I had a trapper in 357 and it was nothing but trouble - sold it right after they stopped production on the 94 and it sold so fast I wish I had a hundred of 'em.
Friend of mine is a lion hunter in in Arizona, chases 'em with dogs year round and absolutely loves the trapper 44 for lions and is his #1 choice for the task of dispatching such a beast.
They're wonderfully handy to keep in the vehical too!
