Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
From the pics, it looks like a good one. I'd be looking into a mold, and a pile of wheelweights if I didn't already have these things. Brass, too.
Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
Looks good in the Pics shown. No closeups ? Didn't say how the Bore is. I am assuming U have already bought it. Won't say it was a little steep as I have not held the Rifle. I'm not putting it down mind U. I will be looking at one at the Next Gun Show in Yuba City in March.
My Bad, it does say the Bore is xclnt.

Have some new brass and lots of lead but no mold or dies yet. Don't know if I should get the Lyman or RCBS mold.

Hard to tell for sure from the photos, but it looks like an honest rifle and in nice condition too. I'd say you got a good deal at that price. Not only that, it is in my favorite Model 92 caliber too!

Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
I have an EMF 1892 carbine "Hartford" Model in .45colt. with a case hardened receiver. I got it about 4 years ago and it was the last of the pre-safety models. I had it "smoothed over" by Nate Kiowa Jones. It is an excellent firearm in fit and finish. It is one of my favorite firearms. I like to ride my horse at full gallop, with reins in my teeth, and shoot this baby offhanded at my bad guy silhouette targets.
The other day my wife asked me how many targets did I "shoot" like this?
I replied, "Shoot....or Kill?
She responded, " Let us restrict it to kill, so that we may have a more manageable figure."
I told her she best let this go.

Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
Well first of all it's lovely and I envy you. I do have to wonder about the finish/wear difference of the barrel/mag tube vs. the receiver - did the seller claim it to be complete and as-original? Don't take that wrong however. As I said it's lovely and I'd like to have one just like it, I'm just speaking up since you asked for all opinions/questions.

Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
looks like a re-blue on the barrel and tube, or it was replaced...
too much contrast between the receiver and the barrel....
I'd say 8 to 10 bills maybe...

I'll say I think it's beautiful. I have to follow KirkDs lead as he is the antique Winchester collector extraordinaire on this forum so far as it comes to my knowledge.

Hello Marvin,
I have that rifle in my survey of the Model 1892 rifles. I had received a number of close up photos and the rifle is totally correct and in quite nice condition with the only obvious point being the the receiver. All of the stamps styles and locations are correct for its serial number range.

I think for $1500 you did fairly well for your self.
Have fun shooting it.

Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
I gotta agree with Kirk also. It's not really uncommon to see Winchester 1892s and 94s with a well worn receiver and almost all of the blue still on barrel and mag tube. Indicates (to me at least), that the gun saw a LOT of time being hand carried, and not in a saddle scabbard or case.

Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
Thanks twobit I will send you the info on my other 92 when I can get some good pics. I do know that Model 94s will show the color difference between the receivers and barrels. My other original 92 has this also so I was taking a shot that this one may be okay. Usually when you ask a seller about refinish they will tell you to the best of my knowledge it has not, so we know that means I don't know. I believe most all old guns have at least had a coat of finish of some sort applied to the wood at some time weather some one wants to admit that or not. Does that count as a refinish, sure but does it really hurt it? I see the new blue book has come up, and I mean way up on prices for most all old guns to reflect what some are being actually sold for. Look at the Win 94s and 92s also the Rem 25s and Marlin 27's these are this things I seem to accumulate.
No problem with your take on the condition of the gun guys, that's why I ask and it's hard to tell from a few photos. Other than seeing it for myself it's hard to say. Some folks have a better more experienced eye for these details. I do shoot mine so I did ask for clarification of what excellent bore means, to me it means good strong sharp slick rifling from one end to the other with no corrosion/pitting or bulges.
Again thanks to all for looking and and providing your thoughts.

Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
For the average used original Model 1892, it is the norm for the receiver to lose its blue long before the barrel and mag tube. I get suspicious when I see the amount of finish on the receiver matching the finish on the barrel and mag tube, unless the rifle is in very high condition, or all the blue is completely worn off everywhere. For the average vintage Model 1892 and Model 1894 and Model 53, the receiver should have less blue than the barrel and mag tube or something is wrong.

If it weren't for the caliber I'd think someone sniched one of my '92s
Still need a .38-40.
Nice rifle. I'm with the others. Quite common to see wear like that.

Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
I agree with Kirk. Its a "clean" gun, nice wood and the expected blue loss on the reciever as these were harder than the barrel/mag and the blue did not penetrate as well. I looked at the gun and said to myself, "12-15," before I saw the price. You did well. --------------Sixgun

I agree, and looking at the lack of blue on the forend cap it’s possible this gun was originally color-cased and it has worn off. Color-case isn’t very durable. I bet it was worn off and someone added some cold blue and it's now worn as well.
The buttplate lever and hammer also look like old color-case.

The hammers were in fact case hardened which has which results in the common multi hued case colors on them. It is a very simple process of unscrewing the bett plate and looking at the bluing on the back side. Based on the serial number of this rifle it was manufactured during 1913 and the butt plate and fore end cap were blued. It is much more probable that these components are just showing the common ware that is found an many rifles that have a fair amount of use.looking at the lack of blue on the forend cap it’s possible this gun was originally color-cased and it has worn off. So Winchester didn't do any special orders guns with color-case buttplates and forend caps?twobit wrote:Nate wrote:The hammers were in fact case hardened which has which results in the common multi hued case colors on them. Re: Win 92 experts, what ya think?
The only problem I can see with that 1892 is that it is heading for your house and not mine.
I would expect to see AUD 2000 plus on that gun if it turned up for sale here in Australia.
In my opinion uneven wearing of the blue from receiver to barrel is normal for Winchesters.
You did well - have a ton of fun with it.
Pop.
