Puma 92 460 S&W
Does anyone think that puma will ever offer the 460 S&W in the 92's? I think that would be awesome.

I would have to agree. They are very nice, however you can't get them with a 16 or 18" brl.

Seems like either a scaled-up version of the 92 or Marlin 1894 could handle it if they wanted to make one, or even the 336 or other longer action beefed if necessary for the pressure.
It does seem that if you can make a durn REVOLVER for the .460, you ought to be able to make a non-'splody barrel for it and a rifle receiver that would hold the shell in place.

Guys, I have a 454 with a lengthened action by Mic McPherson. It is not possible to modify the '92 to cycle a 460 S&W. Not even close. It was designed for pistol cartridges after all. Now the 1886? That probably could be done, but pressures and case head thrust at 65K PSI? I don't think even the much vaunted 1886 could handle that without better metalurgy and heat treating.
I have been after someone to make a stronger levergun, including Freedom Arms. I spoke to Bob and Wayne Baker about it at the SHOT SHOW. Please check my thread there to what they said at a later time. I still have to write it, but its coming.

The 460 seems to max out with 350 grain bullets and is factory loaded in 200 grainers at what, 2300fps? That's a pretty short bullet for the caliber, I would worry about it's penetration. I think the 350s max out around 1900 fps in handloads. Longer barrels might increase those a couple hundred.
A 45/70 can reach those #s easily and stomp them if you can handle the recoil. Paco runs the 350s at 2300. As was stated earlier, the 86 is the same gun, just a little bigger, and a shortened barrel is easy and inexpensive. Someone here bought a short 86 that looked really cool except for the four poorly drilled holes in the side of the receiver for the side-mount scope base.
Unless of course, you have a 460 revolver.....that's a horse of another color....

I know T/C has chambers rifle barrels for the .460. I might pick one up at some point because I find it interesting.
I think chambering it in a tube mag rifle would mean you lose what really sets the round apart from the .454 casull; the pointy tip.
I think it could be very successful as a rifle round in a different platform. A pump, perhaps? I know it won't do anything the 45/70 won't, but it seems like it would shoot flatter out to 200 yards with less powder than it would take to get the same performance out of a 45/70. I don't know this for sure as I haven't studied the reloading data.

My first attempt at an outdoors website: http://www.diyballistics.com
Tycer made the point I was trying to make, that it makes sense to make a short 1886 loaded with 45/70 or even 50/70 and superior ballistics at lower pressures. I was not advocating putting the S&W cartridge in there.
I run my ammo at about a half the pressure the S&W produces and there's not an animal on earth that can stand up to it..,
