Need Help - Winchester Bolt Peep Sight

Post by dz86 »

Last week I picked up my new (to me) Winchester Model 71. It's a 1936 production DeLuxe, but it's pretty tired. I'm going to be getting it in to get some work done on it soon.
It was missing the bolt peep sight. After looking around a bit I managed to find a partial Winchester 98a. As for as I can tell it's missing the elevation screw, the windage screw arrangement, and whatever goes in that hole in front (a pin maybe?). It came with an aperture but it's not correct.
I'd like to get this sight into working condition. I realize it probably won't be possible to find correct parts, at least not right away, but I thought some of you might know of common parts that could be substituted for ones that are missing. That way I can get it mounted and working now, and look for correct parts over time.
I can't find a diagram of these sights, so I don't have any idea wehre to start. I'm hoping somebody here can take some detail close-up photos of how one goes together, let me know what I need, and what parts I might be able to substitute for the ones I'm missing.
TIA
Dave

Here are a couple pics of what I have:

dz86,

The hole in your first pic is for the extractor pin to pass through. The sight uses that pin as it's pivot.

The springs go under the U shaped piece to hold it up. I believe you have a couple other small parts missing.

I sold the bolt with peep I had so I can't take it apart to take pics of.

Frontier Americana sells a reproduction of the bolt peep. Perhaps you can get the parts you need from them. They look quite close to original.

Do you have contact info for them? Neither of the "Frontier Americana"s that I found on a Google search had them listed.

Dave, as I recall the Frontier Americana that reproduces the bolt peep sight is in Fargo, ND.

You also might try Wisner's:

Good Luck!
