Got home from business travel all last week and in the stack of bills and junk mail was one envelope, from the ATF, that I had been waiting on for a month. My "Curio & Relic" license finally arrived!!!

Yes, I'm doing the happy dance! Have already made up a dozen copies and now I just need to start figuring out how to put it to good use!!!

Didn't label this "OT" - as I'm hoping some of that "good use" will be with levergun purchases!!!

I'm ignorant of what that means to you.....An FFL for weapons older than a certain date? Congrats, tho

Make sure to send a copy to Midway and Brownells (maybe others?). You'll get a nice "dealer discount" on every order. I've probably saved the $30 cost of the license in discounts this year.

I was too - learned about it here (on the old forum). The "Curio & Relic" license allows individuals to collect certain weapons from persons/dealers inside - and outside - their state of residence without having to ship through an FFL. In general, any gun made before 1898, any gun that uses obsolete ammunition, and certain other guns classified by the ATF as "C&R" status. They are going to send me the information packet, and the website has the list up to date. The license was only $30 for 3 years, and I understand some of the retailers give discounts to C&R holders. Figured I couldn't go wrong!

Brownells will give anyone with a business address a discount. It doesn't even have to gun related to be eligible. All you have to do is tell them when you order.

In general, a C&R license allows you to buy any firearm 50 years or older w/o going through a regular FFL. Some states do not recognize that for handguns however (CA is one). Certain collectible models of recent manufacture also make the list, see here:

Just remember, it's a collector's license, not a business license.

Also included are firearms 50 yrs old and older. For example, any gun serial numbered as being made in 1958 is now C&R status.

The third purchase I made with my C&R was a C&R NFA weapon, a S&W 76 submachine gun. After the approved Form 4 came back from the NFA Branch to my dealer, he shipped it to me via FedEx. Nothing like having the doorbell ring and finding a subgun on your doorstep.

Stupid question follows,

From what little I know about he Curio lic.
It's says you can not resell.

Does that mean , if you buy something, you have to keep it forever???
Seriously, what happens when you get older and want dispose of
a collection, or want to sell something to replace with another...

Sell a firearm? Guns come into my possession - they rarely go out!

Seriously though, the C&R license is not a FFL - and not intended for business use. I have not received the supporting documentation yet, but I imagine from what I have read in the past that if you occasionally sell a C&R collected firearm, as a private individual, especially in pursuit of funds for another C&R firearm, that is okay. I will read up and let you know!

I had a C&R License for 2 go arounds of 3 years. I bought a couple old Military rifles easy enough, but finally it expired and the ATF didn't bother to send me a renewal. Always figured they would scrutinize harder if I had the license, although that isn't why I let it go. But good luck Jay, it sure will simplify getting stuff you want without a lot of red tape.

No stupid questions, only stupid mistakes.

A C&R license does NOT allow the collector to buy and sell for purposes of making a profit. You ARE permitted to infrequently sell items so as to upgrade or enhance your collection, or sell certain should your collecting interests change. There is no specified "limit" on the number of items that can be sold in a given timeframe.

Congrats .

I just received my renewed C&R . They are good for 3 years , so I guess I have had one for 6 years .

50 years is the cut off time period , unless it is listed in the C&R list .

Yes , you can sell , trade or give away a C&R gun .

What it means is you can not use it as a back door way to make a business out of it . For that , you have to have a dealers FFL .
