Winchester Model 94 NRA MUsket?
My local gun shop has one on consignment. It's in mint condition (unfired) but no box. I can get it for around $600 out the door. This is beautiful gun, with a ladder sight, and full length wood on a long barrel. I have only seen a few of these over the years.
It has a very smooth action, and does not have the sheetmetal pickup. I assume the gun was probably made in 1971 as it has 1871 to 1971 on the recevier.
I am tempted to buy it, but it's in mint condition, and I would almost hate to fire it. But not having the box hurts it as collector, however I am not really a collector, anyway.
Has anyone here owned one of these and shot them? How did they shoot?

The price is decent for the model and condition. If it apeals to you, I'd say buy it.
If it was me, I'd shoot it. You lose money on any new gun you shoot. Maybe a bit more on something of this sort, but if you take care of it, it shouldnt be too much of a hit. Sounds like ti would be a unique, fun rifle to shot and own. I've only seen a handful of them and regret not buying one when the price was lower and I had money.

I generally see them in Tucson for around $500, and they're usually mint.

If you like it buy it an shoot it - thats what we are here for in that respect. Let someone else be a museum.
You'll waste more than you would lose on any number of things.

I picked one up the year after they were introduced and shot the hell out of it. Mine was plenty accurate and with 16 year old eyes, the sights allowed me to worry the devil out of groundhogs and coffee cans to about 350 yards.Lastmohecken wrote:My local gun shop has one on consignment. Re: Winchester Model 94 NRA MUsket?
I have one of these I picked up several years ago, and yes I do shoot it. I removed the rear barrel sight and installed a Lyman receiver sight (the receiver is factory drilled and tapped). It is fun to shoot and attracts a lot of attention as most folks have never seen a fullstock Winchester 30-30. Style points for sure!!

The barrel is rather thin and tends to heat up rapidly, so accuracy so far is not the best. I intend to work with it some more as I really have not shot it a whole lot. Also, mine had a problem feeding rounds. They would get hung up in the magazine, and I had to whack the forend to get them to feed on through. I finally got busy and took it apart to find the problem. It turned out that the magazine tube was a bit undersized for the hole in the receiver and the rim of the shell was sometimes catching on the edge of the receiver. I used a tapered punch to expand the end of the magazine tube for a closer fit in the receiver and the problem went away.
Six hundred would be about the going rate around here for one as you describe.

I've never cared much for the appearance of the NRA musket, but I liked the NRA rifle.
Sold mine in a moment of weakness/poverty and regretted ever since.
I'd buy another NRA rifle if I happened upon one for a reasonable price.
BTW, a lot of the original production was dumped in Canada because they didn't sell well in the USA.

No experience with the musket , I did however purchase the rifle model and 2 boxes of federal 150 gr ammo for 75$ at the Gibsons store in Cheyenne.... alooong time ago, and that rifle is sure a good shooter.
If you like it and have the change in your pocket get it, I'm betting you won't be disapointed.

Thanks, for the comments, fellows.
I am going to maybe make an offer, and see what happens, but I recond I am just trying to decide if I would enjoy owning it, based on what I already have.

Ive got one very similar to it, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police comemmorative. Exactly the same with the flip up ladder rear sight but gold, not silver like yours. Mine is NIB and I look at at like this, they wont be making em anymore and how many have you seen? I have not seen any down here to be honest.

Re: Winchester Model 94 NRA MUsket?
I bought one a number of years ago. I wanted to shoot it at sidematches. After I sat down and worked up load, after load, after load, and still could not get a decent group. I traded it off. It was felt, with a couple other shooters, that the round barrel with the single band, was not benficial to accuracy.
Good luck, the one I had, was a wall hanger.

Neat looking Guns. I saw a Matched set Musket, and Rifle NIB for sale at a local Gun store a few years back. The rifle resembles the Model 64A.
