OT - AWA=American Western Arms 45 Colt

Post by pwl44m »

Never heard of it, it is a single action in 45 Colt. It has Birds Head Grips made from what appears to be real Ivory. It is the smoothest Single I have ever cycled. It is a beautiful Gun , Engraved with gold or Bronze plate or whaever might have been used on The Cylinder and ejector tube. The rest of the Gun is Stainless. 5 1/2 in barrel.
Any Body know anything about these Guns ?

I've had several American Western Arms SAAs. They are still in business and make a quality piece. The birds head grips are, I think, one of their options. I'll bet the rest is not stainless but nickel plate. Look at their web site.

This one is in the wrong place too, HOBIE !!
MM, there is talk on one forum that AWA is out of business. One Guy said He had 5 pistols, made 3 work into fine Pistols and the other 2 were stripped for parts. The Pistol I looked at might be a little Pricey at $1350. Will find out more about it. AWA is touted as being near perfect copies of Colt.

Well as luck or fate would have it I went back today to pick up My Uberti 73 and look at this Gun again. It is a consignment Gun so I had asked the Lady at the shop ( also the owner ) if She would call the Guy with a couple questions. I wanted to know how old the Gun is,if any action work had been done on it,and if the grips R real Ivory. She hadn't contacted Him so She called Him right then. He said the Gun is about 10 yrs old. The action had been worked on by one Art Lee-Master Gunsmith ? And the Grips are Ultra Ivory ( 99% Ivory He said)
He was asking $1600 for the Gun and had dropped it to $1350 but I wanted a little more information. Now while She has Him on the Phone He tells Her He has it's twin still at Home and will sell Me both of them for $2000.
Anybody know anything about the xtras on this Gun, ie Ultra Ivory and Art Lee ? The grip frame is serialed to the frame so I am assuming factory. Now the big question to those in the Know, R they worth that much ? They would sure look nice beside the SS 73.
Thx in advance for any prodding.

I don't know Art Lee but I've got 2 AWAs and have had no problems. They made a couple of different models. Ultra Ivory is real close to look and feel of real ivory but about half the price. I have one pair and several real ivory and you have to look real hard to tell the difference. That is with old eyes. Very durable.

The AWA s are good copies but not worth anywhere the price asked. I've bought several for around $350 each. The grips may be worth a hundred but nowhere near the price of real ivory which is about seven hundred. For the price he's asking you can buy a real Colt. Look in the SASS classifieds. A high quality tune-up is nice but usually adds nothing to what you can get for the gun. Just my experience.

pwl44m,
Look at AWAguns.com. Sure looks like they are still in business.
