French Grey
I own several of the the Browning High Grade lever actions. The receivers finish on all of them is referred to as French Grey. What is it, and how do you like the look?

Re: French Grey
I've thought for years a French Gray finish was CCH with the colors removed. I found on the Shiloh Forums that it's a different quenching process than CCH. Googling it I found some use a chemical/acid type process.

Pewter. Don't know if the material is clad or just a coloring process made to look like pewter.

Re: French Grey
What I've read it's a pewter finish on the commemorative models.
My Legendary Frontiersmen in 38-55. Probably isn't very durable, but it sure is pretty.

Re: French Grey
If I remind me correctly, the polished steel is treated with phosphoric acid, which gives the finish a grey look and also prevents rust.

Yep, it's an acid-etching process that both protects the bare metal, and mutes the reflectiveness.

(Hint, hint)
Government office attracts the power-mad, yet it's people who just want to be left alone to live life on their own terms who are considered dangerous.
History teaches that it's a small window in which people can fight back before it is too dangerous to fight back.
