Shot my Henry for the first time and I have a question

Post by tattoo13 »

It is a H001 and I am shooting cheap bulk Remington ammo.
When I shoot it the lever jumps, it is not horrible, but it is distracting.
Is this normal?

I can feel the lever bumping back against my hand when I shoot kind of like the bolt is not locking in to battery and getting pushed back making the lever try to open.

I simply can't imagine such a problem. When I shoot a lever my hand is inside the loop and slightly squeezing it against the bottom tang. The precludes the back of my hand from touching anything even in my .45-70. I can't imagine the lever unlocking on a .22 LR or the gun recoiling such that it bumped the back of my hand. :?:

Neither of my Henry leverguns do that, and I believe it's not usual - If I were you, I'd give Henry Customer Service a call tomorrow, as they'll fix it for the bubble, whether you're the original owner, or not.

BTW - Under Federal Law, it's perfectly legal for any private citizen (i.e., YOU) to send (mail their own firearm to any FFL or gun factory: AND receive the same firearm back, without having to go through an FFL holder. (door-to-door, both ways)

I'm with Hobie, I can't imagine how this could happen. Your hand should be in the lever and thumb over the stock, and as Hobie says pulling the lever up against the stock. I have 11 lever action rifles of various brands, including a Henry .22 lever carbine and have never had this happen. Puzzling :?:

I am holding it as Hobie said.
When I shoot it feels like the handle is trying to open. The best I can figure is the bolt is moving back and trying to open the lever.
And yes it is a .22, I don't have a secret source for ammo.

Something else that I noticed, when I close the lever just at the end of the lever throw I get a click.
Not sure what that is but I am pretty sure that is not normal.

tattoo13,

The "click" is absolutely normal. That is the sound of the locking bolt going into position.

The movement that you describe is NOT normal. My H001L has IN EXCESS of 10,000 rounds through it, and I have never experienced the problem that you are having. Please, e-mail Henry, and tell them what is going on.

I don't have a Henry but I think every lever I own has a "lever safety" that engages when the lever is closed and it feels like a little click. Some (like my Marlin) are more obvious than others.

Ah, Hagler types faster than I!

I will definetly contact Henry tomorrow.
I took the rifle out and just to verify, if I shoot it without holding the lever closed it will open a little.
The lever ends up about 3/4" down from it's uppermost point.

I'd get a hold of Henry. That shouldn't happen.

There's a guy on "rimfirecentral" that has noticed a similar thing with his Henry, he describes it as feeling a sting through the lever!

I'd contact Henry they will put it right.

I emailed Henry last night and this morning Mr. Imperato sent me an email asking that I send the rifle to them.
He even offer to send me a UPS return label.
What great customer service!
