Overall it is in pretty good nick although spoiled somewhat by the way the replacement tang sight has been fitted and the dull grey of the barrel.
I won't get to shoot her until after next Wednesday when a shipment ammo is due in town...
And a question. There is quite a bit of play in the breechblock when open. I'm assuming that allows the block to back-up against the action and take the pressure there rather than against the hinge. Am I on the right track here?
The play in the breach block is intentional. It is as you guessed there to remove the load on the hinge pin. When fired the breach block will set back against the rear of the breach instead of allowing the hinge pin to avoid the pressure against it. It looks pretty good, of course I am sure someone on this board would be glad to take it off your hands for a hundred dollars if asked to do so. They were great rifles and work well when loaded with what they like. Good Luck. ATB

Those are fine looking rifles. I failed to buy one a couple years ago used in very good condition in a shop for $500.

Thanks for your comments. I'm not quite sure how I will jump reagarding the sights. From what I have read and seen, the original Officers Models came with a tang sight very similar to the one that would have been on my H&R:
They were also fitted with rifle rear sights. I am thinking of getting a Pedersoli 1879 Buckhorn rifle sight
and going back to the original style tang sight, also available from Pedersoli.
The idea being to get her set up like this original.
I have one and love it. Mine shoots very well with jacketed bullets but only mediocre with cast. The issue tang sight is a pita. When loosened to adjust, there is no way to return to the original setting except trial and error. I sent my base and staff to Lee Shaver and had him adapt one of his excellent staffs to my base. It works very well now and is very repeatable.
I've never noticed changes in POI due to wood shrink/swell but then again, I don't shoot over about 300 yards. I'm sure extending the tang to have a metal base would help, though.
