Value of newer Marlin

Post by fordwannabe »

Hey Gents, first Merry Christmas, second a buddy has an opportunity to buy a newer Marlin in 38-55 with a oct barrel and checkering "delux edition", whatever that means. He is asking me what is a decent price and I have no idea, he says the wood is really nice EXCEPT, whoever tried to install sling swivels on it...missed. He says the hole for the rear swivel is WAY off to one side and he's not sure if it can even be used like it is or if the wood has to be replaced. Any ideas on value with the issue? What is it? Thanks for your help. Tom

Here's what someone is asking, for a NIB one.

I never look at "asking" prices only closed auctions.... 90% of the guns on Gun Broker are guys "fishing" for the next sucker.

Same often goes for Guns America.

I've seen the same rifles listed over and over again for months on end.

My opinion is it's a 500.00 rifle. The stock will never look right even with a professional repair which will cost over 100 bucks. It will have to be replaced to ever be "worth" what one in correct condition would be.

Without the defect it's a 550-600 dollar rifle.

I guess you didn't bother to see that it's $695, for NIB. That's what they originally sold for.....NIB.

also I think we are comparing apples and oranges here-- marlin did a 500 gun run of deluxe rifles about 2 years ago. I have never seen one in the flesh. The cowboy edition is the one shown for sale. These always vsell high as there is a ton of demand for them and like said $700 is the NIB retail. This is a NIB gun it is stated.

The mistake on the stock ruins the value to my way of thought and more so something not just a shooter. if he doesn't want to shoot it you are doing a favor to take it at a shooters price.

He is looking for a shooter, but he is a machinist by trade and meticulis(sp) in details. I thought $450 -$500 would be about right for this. I also know he has no other friends who load for the 38-55 so I can guess who's casting and loading those rounds if he gets it. Merry Christmas. Tom
