The first of the Century Series collection of USAF jet fighters, The F-100 was the first USAF fighter capable of supersonic speed in level flight. The Century Series is a popular name for a group of US combat aircraft representing models designated between F-100 and F-106 which went into full production.

awp101,
That pic brings back some good memories. I was on the Standboard Load Crew for the F-100 when I was in the AF/AG.I had top secert clearence for all of the weapons the F-100 carried including the Sidewinder missle. I was in the 166th TACFS in 1966. Went with the aircraft to Korea 1968/69. The F-100 was an excellent A/C. We refered to it as the "Lead Sled" I always loved to watch their roll out on take off.Just as they got to roll they would go full military with the AB,the tail pipe eye lid would open and you see the white shock diamonds in the exhaust stream.Quite a sight at night. That was another life ago.
I still have my model of the F-100 on a cabinet in my relaoding area.
Thanks for the action pic !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Speaking of another life... I was puckered big time at what sounded like a very close incoming 122mm rocket going over, but before I got halfway dove to the ground, a very very low Super Saber went over and into my line of sight ...a bomb sailing along already detached (by about 10 feet!!) from it's wing, which hit, and to my surprise didn’t blow up instantly but bounced up about seven or eight feet high, continued on and then detonated about a seventy five yards past the skip point ...These F100s worked in pairs.. Strafing and bombing...Watch out for the rain of 20mm cases!!! ... They flew a circling oval pattern.. one plane on the opposite side of the oval... Given that I’d heard so much about the new Phantoms I was very surprised to see F100s...That’s when I learned the USAF still liked F 100s 8)

The perfect "old school" jet and my favorite of the Cold War-era fighters. We had a squadron of them in Japan where I was an Air Force brat 1962-1964. Mid way through our stint, they were replaced by the F-105 Thunderchief, which also made their way as the first batch of 105s to Thailand (Vietnam) . Though the F-105 was an amazing plane (really sat up there and was about the size of a B-17 front to back!), the F-100 was a favorite of the pilots that flew them, and as a young plane nut I never quite warmed up to the 105 as much as the smaller, more agile Super Sabre.

Was at Bien Hoa (Oct-Nov 1966). The F100 were OK but couldn't carrie the payload that the A1 Skyradiers (old prop jobs)could. We would watch F100's taxie out with 4 bombs on the wings followed by several A1's with 8 bombs underneath. They were getting very old buy the sixtys. I ended up at Phu Cat working on C7A's, when we got a concrete runway we also got a squadren of F100's, One of then made a victory roll at high speed over the base and discinerated (sp?). Neat looking bird though.

The 366th was in Danang, Bis. Alot of his pictures have "Freedom Hill" in the background.

Well the yellow power unit is a MD-3, always good for blowing fire out the exhaust on startup.

I was a grunt (Platoon Leader/CO XO) with the 1/5th Mech, 25th Div out of Chu Chi in '67-'68 and had F100's in support a LOT! They were OK comming across my front but always scared the shxx out of me if I had to call them in towards me! I remember one airstrike I called in, we had NVA in a hooch in the middle of a rice paddy. First run, here comes the F100 straight towards us...suddenly two big X's from under the wing...high drag 500#ers. Four of us trying to get thru the hatch of the M113 at the same time! Can't tell how far those bombs will range! I whole heartedly agree with the previous post...PLEASE, just send me A-1's!!!

Yeah I thought of you when I first posted that Danny. I'll tell him Bis as I will be calling tommorow to tell him just that. Thank you all for your service and sacrifice.

BTW, I had the opportunity to fly right seat in A37's out of the 3rd Tac Fighter Wing, Ton Son Noot mid '68. My 25th Div CO became the 3rd Tac Ftgr Wing air-ground liason. It was fantastic! Vertical bomb delivery, just like a Stuka, very precise delivery followed by a 6G pull out! "A" ticket all the way! A LOT more accurate than F100's or F105's!

I'm stationed in Mountain Home AFB, home of the 366th Fighter Wing, formerly 366th TFW. I've worked on the only F-4 not on a stick here on base. A guy down in Twin Falls bought some panels off of it and I got to help remove them. First time in my career that I worked on something older than me!

Very cool! Love those Phantoms..they could really move, as in 1,400 mph+. I'll try and get some more pics up. No F-100's by 1972 but have some F-105's and the ubiquitous B-52's. Also a picture of my Dad's barracks which had been reduced to sticks by mortar fire, just before he arrived.

I know what you mean about working on aircraft older than you. I was a recit. mech. (prop jobs) so everything but the 01's and C7's were old. The first bird I worked on was a C47 built in 1937

I posted this in a thread back in Sept
Skyraiders were Pee bringers!...and when them flashy Vietnamese AF pilots were at the reins....Well, they put on the best show I ever seen...WWII style...I swear........Big fun to watch when a train of them unleashed on something...They'd take turns... one after another they’d roll out and dive on in...dang near straight down in bug eyed dives with everything rockin at the same time!.... launchin rockets..droppin bombs...guns thumpin...YeeeeHahh!! Tons of earth & whole trees flying in the air!!...then zooming back up into a pretty wingover to survey their work... mebbe for encore ....

I, for one, am thankful you decided to include a pic of THE MOST SINISTER, MENACING looking war bird, and I know this is VERY subjective, to ever be thought of, designed & built by man.......the McDonnell-Douglas F4 PHANTOM. I can't think of any other aircraft that would generate as much fear in the enemy just by watching it come at them as this one, but that's just my opinion. jd45
