11-12 gr. of Unique with that 405 cast bullet should be a good combination. Nice easy shooter, and is plenty accurate in every 45-70 I've tried it in.

You might try Missouri Bullet. I've bought theirs and they shoot good. And they're about as inexpensive as you can get ($36/200). They offer 405gr, .458 dia., BHN 18 on their website, but they have a .459 sizer. That's what I specify in the comments section of the order. I usually plink with 24-25gr. 2400 or 31gr H4198.

AA 5744 is about as good as smokeless powder can get for cast bullets.
2f blackpowder is the best

While using Unique do you need a filler? There is alot of case left with only 10-11 grains.

+1 on Unique. You can go a grain and a half higher if you need to for accuracy sake. Not position sensitive at all.
Kind regards,

For a trapdoor load (I like to stick with one powder as much as possible) 33gr of H4198 gives me about 1300fps. That's a good 100yd deer load, too.

I my 2001 winchester 1886 rifle, I use 34.5grns IMR4198 for around 1350fps. Accurate load with rem's 300 and 405grn bullet, also with lead plain base 405grn Bear Creek bullets. Winchester brass and primers.

23 to 25 gr of 2400 will put you in the "trapdoor" range and 24gr. gives me 1385 fps out of the 26" bbl which will stop most anything that needs stopped.
