First post here... UPDATE Ruger SA
Hey everyone.
I've been doing a lot of reading here and decided today to join up finally.
I have already learned a bunch reading here and hope to learn much more.
FYI my only lever at this time is a win 94ae in .357, which has been good to me so far. Next up a good SA or 2!(Gunshow here this coming weekend so who knows what I will find)

Welcome to the forum. As you stated you've been here for awhile so you know the kind of people who congregate here. Great people and unbelieveable range of experience from leverguns to most anything.

cajun_64,
Welcome to the forum.
I'd have trouble putting the cash out for a real Colt, but once I did I'd have NO TROUBLE AT ALL shooting the stuffins out of it.

Are you a "resident" of Lafayette or a native "coonass"
I work for a company out of Baton Rouge and spend a lot of time in LA.

Howdy from your west side. I'm about 130 from you. I'm in the capitol of SW LA. Port Arthur TX. We have more cajuns here than Lake Charles. We have our own Madi Gras and several Cajun Resuants and Night clubs.cajun_64 wrote:Hey everyone.

Seriously, this area is where the first major oil boom started. The Lucas gusher of 1901 at Spindletop just north of us was the start Mobil, Texaco and Gulf Oil. Many of the Cajuns from SW LA came here to work the oil patch many settling in the Port Arthur area. My dads folks came here in the teens from he Jennings LA.area.

I am familiar with your area too. Has some distant relatives lived in Orange for the longest time. Have lost track of them now.Nate Kiowa Jones wrote:Howdy from your west side. Sorry, no pics yet but hopefully have 1 or 2 more to add next week with the 94
Since I am not sure what I will get, what would everyone recommend on a budget smaller than a Colt SA. Think I will stay with the .357 for now until I can get a lot more range time at the least.
Thank you .

If you want to do lots of shooting over many years to come, get a Ruger. I own a couple wore-out colt SAs, a wore-out colt Python, and a couple of rugers with more rounds thru 'em than you would believe and they are still tight as when I bought 'em.

I have to second that. My perspective on the various SAA's is from a gunsmiths view. Not what they cost or how well they retain their value. Purely from the mechanical perspective.
If you want tuff out of the box, Ruger is the way to go, but I don`t consider it to be a true SAA. The ruger lock works were designed in the 1950's. It is nothing like the colt style lock basically unchanged since 1836.
Comparing Colt style SAA actions to Rugers is like comparing model T`s to 60`s muscle cars.

Re: First post here
Welcome Cajun_64
Glad that you made it through the hurricane season this year without one!
I've been living in Kansas so long, I feel like a native (am married to one). My family is from Abbeville, my Mother and older sister still live there; my oldest sister is in Baton Rouge.
I, myself, come from a long line of coonasses. My last name is Hebert and my mother's maiden name was also Hebert; I am reasonably sure that my parents are only related through marriage, unless you consider third cousins related...
As Nate said, the Rugers are a good choice. Very strong, I have a 4 5/8" 357 Blackhawk that is a very good shooter and could be a good companion for your rifle.
A side of this forum that I really like is that we can discuss other firearms besides our leverguns. Actually we can (and do) discuss just about any topic imaginable here.
Again, welcome and enjoy!

Re: First post here
Well a Ruger it is!
357. 5-1/2" blued vaquero.
I was not impressed with the selections this weekend. Had many, many old levers and spent time fondling them.
2 months ago the selection on SA's were alot better. I need to start going to the ones out of town.
Won't be able to get any pictures until the weekend, but I am going to an indoor range on my lunch break to do some testing.
Merry Christmas

Re: First post here... UPDATE Ruger SA
Range Report:
put 200 rounds 38sp. and 6 .357 GS's to finish it off at lunch. I must say I am impressed with it's accuracy. If I can pick up some more ammo I will visit the range again before weeks end.
I think I will be searching for a mate for it soon.
I will add the 357's were a bit punishing on my hand. If I shoot many more of those, I see some new grips in the future. But otherwise it was sweet!

One thing to remember when shooting a SA-like firearm... is that it was designed to roll up in your hand, this places the hammer at an easier position to pull it back for the followup shot. Not sayin' you did, but just sayin', in case this is your first SA-type revolver. Trying to grip it so hard that it doesn't roll will wear you out! Plus, that doesn't aid accuracy!
