Need help with disassembly of Win. Mod. 88 lever action

Post by Alf24055 »

Hi! I'm new to the forum here but I sure hope someone can help. I have a Win. Model 88 that has the infamous cracked stock. Overall the stock is in bad shape. I plan to repair the crack and maybe refinish the stock as well. I have everything off the stock except the "pistol grip cap insert" which is a thin metal plate with the Red W on it. Can anyone tell me how to remove this without damaging it? Thus far I can't tell if it is glued or has some type of clip underneath it.

Also, I have a parts list but could not find a manual. Any ideas where this could be found? The serial number is 208297A if this is of any help.

Thanks and all comments are appreciated!

Alf24055,

Welcome to the forum! :D I don't have an answer for you, yet, but this page has some interesting information on the Models 88 & 100:

EDIT:

This exploded view shows that a screw holds the grip cap in place, and the disk covers it:

So, either it is glued in place, or it is a press-fit. You could try to carefully twist the entire grip cap off of the stock, then push the screw out, to pop out the disk. ...but, someone else may know better.

Welcome! :) The ones I have seen in the past and mine have a small amount of epoxy or silicon that holds in place. I use a very thin blade or thin screw driver to get underneath the insert and work around it to pry it off. Hopefully it's silicon because it's more flexible than epoxy. Work slowly around the insert and if you are worried about scratching the metal cap put some tape on the blade or screw driver. Let me know how it works out.

Later Winchester grip caps have a screw cover on them that is just a stick-on. Hard to tell it is not just part of the cap. The red W you speak of could be that way. I think they were called metalcals (instead of decals). If so, you can just peel it off and there is the screw! The ones like this have four points that stick down into the wood so the cap won't turn. Hope this helps.
