Well, I was gone on business travel all last week, and really just wanted to spend the day with the kids today. The afternoon hit 62 degrees, and it was a pretty day. In addition to blowing up the gingerbread house with firecrackers (other post), I decided to try out an old fiberglass longbow I recently had a string fitted to. I've had this bow for 30 years, and according to the guy at the shop, it is probably 40-50 years old.
Boy Wonder gave it a try too - and enjoyed it!
Here's a close up of it. An old wood arrow too - doubt they make these any more! Do they?
Also tried it with a modern carbon arrow - you can really tell the difference in speed between the two!

YK My son and I still have bows and when our weather is a bit warmer we spend many hours shooting targets. Bow hunting is illegal here!
I took my son to an archery store when he was four and got little fiberglass bow about 8lb pull. He thought the real arrows with metal points were great compared to the toy ones with rubber suckers.

Yep, a good day. Some of the most enjoyable times I have is roaming the woods with a good longbow and some old broadhead or blunt tipped arrows shooting at targets of opportunity. Leaves, old stumps, shadows, etc, none are safe!! Besides being fun and relaxing in and of itself, its great practice for bowhunting.
And yes, wood arrows are still available, you can buy them ready to shoot, or as I do, build them myself. Wood is all I have shot since 1985.

Took my oldest daughter to a 3D shoot when she was 1 1/2 yrs old.
had to hold her up so she could shoot over the small bushes. She had
the same setup as your son. Never saw a kid so excited!!!!!!!

I got a nice compound bow several years ago to 'hunt' with - but quickly realized I was not that patient, and the deer seemed to waltz around about 50 yards out, and mock me - "Hey, nice bow!" "Cool sights!"
So I waited for GUN season and got my revenge .
This year, however, my son received a bow from my wife (she was going to give him mine, but she didn't realize its draw weight wouldn't adjust low enough for him). Now, I'm glad she had to buy him his own, because he's gotten 'into it' so much that he set up a range he can practice on, and I think I'll get mine out just so we can shoot together. Ammo is cheap and no hearing protection needed. He'll probably hunt with a bow next year, but I'm still not sure I will. Either way, we'll get some fun activity together.

I still have a Ben Pearson fiberglass bow that looks like that as well. Mine is 45#. I keep it for bow fishing and knocking around places where I wouldn't want to take my Martin Vision.

Looks like great fun! Kids take so readily to archery. My youngest girl (6) enjoys taking her recurve out on adventures slaying dragons (stumps), witches (bushes), and other ferocious creatures that seem to lurk in our yard when her imagination takes charge. You can find a great selection of kids equipment at 3RiversArchery.com They carry all kinds of wood arrows, good quality and price. You may find the feathers shoot better than the vanes, as the feathers fold past the shelf and the vanes kick the arrow out.

GK - illegal? You have to be kidding? WHY?
We still have a ton of "sucker arrows" and small bows - which he has had since he was about 2. We've had many a "wars" in the backyard or basement with those! He does have his own bows - a long bow that is his size, as well as a small compound bow, which I purchased for him when he was 6 months old! He's almost ready for that one!!!

I'm not sure quite why it's illegal here to Bow Hunt. I think it was a cruelty issue and poaching with crossbows that caused the Nanny State to tell us what we can and cannot do! We can still Bow Hunt fish but apart from me and my son I don't know anyone else who does.

I thought it might be something like that. You else, at some point in the last 50 years some criminal was threatened by a homeowner with a bow & arrow, and the state had to step in to protect the criminal's rights! That is how it seems to work - at least from our side of the pond looking in!!!

Last year I bought about a dozen Pearson takedowns.
25-65 lbs in 5 lb increments. will use as many as i can
get arrows for at the end of the month when i go to the
mens retreat. Have to make a bunch of strings too!
Oh Yeah, bowfishin.....
Hit a 10 lb carp and hang on, what fun.
I have picked up several bow reels too and plan to
see whick I like best!
