OT. My new Savage edge range report

Post by iceman »

I did some VERY informal shooting this morning with my new Savage edge in 223 rem. I just wanted to line up the scope (A Voretx Diamondback) and was pleasantly surprised. The scope tracked very nicely and was nice and clear. Once I got it about 1/2" high at 50 yards, I backed up to 100 and tried some medium loads of 60 gr Hornady Vmax. I was just resting across my ATV and I was getting 2 touching and the 3rd about 3/4" left and same height. I might of pulled that one as I wasn't on a very solid rest and I am lefthanded. I am about 2" high and a little left of center of the POA. I should be getting around 2800 fps with this load and I'm tempted to call it done and load up a bunch.
So far quite pleased with the performance of this $300 out the door rifle.

I was told Savage was threatened with a lawsuit over the Edge name. I was told Remington had rights to the Edge name. The rifles are now being called Axis.

For a rifle of this price range the trigger is not bad at all. Moderately heavy but fairly crisp. I have done nothing in the way of smoothing or lightening ut,but it should be fairly easy. I is basically an old model 110 in a plastic stock. so far so good. I think I'll load up a bunch of the loads I shot today and call it good until warmer weather when I can comfortably play with different loads to squeeze the most out of this one.
For the price a great deal in my opinion.

Saying that it is the same action and barrels they have been using for ages I am not surprised by your results. It has been my experience that Savage rifles accurate beyond what their price tags would lead you to believe. Have you had the stock off yet? If the trigger mechanism is the same that they use on the Stevens and the pre-Accutrigger Savage rifles it is fairly easy to adjust the pull weight. I adjusted my Stevens and it is now quite pleasant.

I have taken it out of the stock and inspected the action already. It is basically the same as my old model 110cl I used to have. The trigger should not be an issue to adjust. For now I just wanted to see what potential it has and it sure has alot. As I said for now I will use as is and play more in the spring when it is a little more pleasant outside. I am shooting 24gr of H335 under a Hornady 60gr V max. I am using H335 because I have quite a bit of it around and don't use it in anythging else. I also have some H322 that I might try with the lighter bullets I have kicking around. Anybody try IMR 4895 in the 223 Rem?
