First lever-gun deer

Post by 375hh1973 »

Firearm season started here in Michigan on the 15th. My dad has private land near Baldwin, which is mostly past-prime oak forest, not the greatest deer producing land but opening week is tradition, more about spending time with dad and our hunting buddy, Merlin, than it is about killing deer. When I want to kill deer, I go in southern Michigan. Anyway on opening day, I sat in one of my spots until about 830 and saw nothing. No deer, no squirrels, no birds, nada. I hate it when I don't see anything so I moved about 100 yards closer to a 10-year old clear cut on federal property with the hopes of changing my luck. I had sat about 10 minutes when I heard hooves out in front. A deer came trotting by, left to right about 80 yards out. In about 1.5 seconds I determined that it wasn't tiny and that I was gonna shoot it. I didn't have a clear neck shot which I have always preferred so I double-lunged it. The Hornady 150 grain SST .308 win bullet busted through a rib, made jelly out of the right lung, punched a hole in the left lung, and exited about the size of a quarter. Done deal. Scope is a Leupold Vari-X-III, 2.5-8x36. Gun shoots 1 inch groups all day long with this ammo. Am going to go out to N. Dakota to hopefully chase muleys, just may have to see if I can't get one with a lever!

Well done, congratulations! You certainly won't have any excuses with a rifle that shoots like that.

Congrats! That BLR is a keeper! I use that ammo in 308 Winchester as well....great stuff!

Enjot those backstraps!
