I have tried to find a good answer to my question but can't find any thread that previously covers it, so here it is...
Can you either buy or reload a 30-30 round that shoots (recoil) like a .357 or .45 carbine? I have young teens that are not ready for the full kick from the standard 30-30 round. Thanks in advance! Bulldog87
Easy if you reload your own. You can buy a Lee Loader for 30-30 for about 25 bucks, and although a little slow, they will work great.
Then get some load data from a reloading manual, buy some powder, primers, and bullets and you are ready to go. Warning! This can lead to an addiction that cannot be cured. It will lead to buying more equipment and trying lots of new "stuff"! But, you will have a smile on your face every time you go to the range.
The Alliant guide lists a 165Gr lead bullet with 7.0Gr of Unique as a cowboy load giving 1236 FPS, also Trailboss would give you a nice old cowboy load. I would think even little kids could shoot those loads by the bucketful.

Bulldog87,
Let me tell you a brief story. When I got married I got not only a 5'5" wife, but two step sons as well. SS A: was 14 and B was 10. When I introduced all of them to my Win 94 30-30s I had only regular 150gr ammo. I made sure they all had ear muffs on and taught them how to position the stock firmly against their shoulders. One day of shooting and I lost my rifles. My wife and my 10 year old wanted nothing to do with light loads from then on. My 14 yo didn't care one way or the other.
Young teens will have no trouble with the recoil of a standard 30-30 load if introduced properly.
As for the lighter loads, they are out there both in hand load data and factory loads. I can't recommend any cos I've never shot any.
Good luck.
Joe
