Heading for New Mexico tomorrow - Mule Deer hunting

Post by shooter »

My hunt starts on Saturday, so I'm heading out early tomorrow morning. I'm hoping to get a nice one again this year, but I'm just looking forward to spending time with family and friends, and enjoying the desert for a few days. After my Mulie hunt, I'm stopping by my lease here in TX to do some whitetail hunting. Nothing like a full week of hunting to make you enjoy unemployment  If only I could figure out a way to make money doing this, I'd be set. Hopefully I will find a job soon so these trips will be much less stressful on the finances and I will be able to enjoy them.

Mescalero,

My parents live in Roswell, and we will be hunting about 45 miles east of there off Hwy 70 I believe, towards Portales. It's some rough desert country, but there are some big deer out there. I hope the scrub oaks made a good crop this year. The deer taste great with a steady diet of acorns.

My wife and I just got back from New Mexico. I can't speak on the conditions around Portales but I saw the type of scrub oak deer country you're talking about, some of it so thick you couldn't even hunt it without really getting torn up.

We saw a lot of deer in the mornings around farm ponds and, what surprised me, herds and herds of antelope. But they were mainly up north.

From what I saw, I think you're going go have a great trip.
