Been there, done that, sorta. The tallest transmission tower I climbed was 645'. No elevator, just a step leg, which means that one leg of the tower has external steps and we climbed the structure carrying a handline that was used to winch up the a "bull" line that brought up the tools needed to do the job. Dragging 1600' of 1/2" rope that distance ain't for the feint of heart. It takes a minimum of three crew members to drag the weight of the small line to the top. Thankfully, and for the back's sake, helicopters do the majority of the heavy lifting these days. Transmission line work is hard duty, but I loved it. :)

That is pretty impressive. I've been in electric distribution line work for 32 years as a lineman, an instructor and as a line superintendent and with all of the climbing restrictions that have been and will be placed on us, I cannot imagine free-climbing to that height. We have a good view from the top of our 75' poles.

Whoever that is I tip my hat to them. Free climbing most of that, wow. Made parts of my anatomy pucker. I had to quit watching it. Bobbing his head up and down like that almost gave me vertigo.

Not for a million dollars. I'll salute the man that would climb that tower though.

I suppose once you're up a couple hundred feet, it doesn't matter how much higher you go, safety-wise, but it seems like wind would blow you right off the thing pretty easily.

I had a patient who was an American Indian and high-rise steel worker, and I asked him about the 'height' thing, and he just said he wasn't bothered by height at all, ever, so it seemed like a good job to do, since so many other people had 'an irrational fear of heights'. Yeah. Irrational. Anyway, maybe there are some people who just aren't bothered in the least by heights just like some people aren't bothered in the least by spiders or snakes, even though 90% of people tend to be.

I wonder how many DO fall, though... :?

Well, from that height at least you'd be able to say a LONG prayer, maybe even call your priest on the way down.

At maximum theoretical terminal velocity a pole climber would have only 3 seconds before making his own 6x6. (TV of 143m/sec)

At "normal" TV (53-55 m/s)he'd have a whopping 10sec (+/-).

1700ft isn't that high for freefall.

Though I never have had a fear of heights, my dad did. He never did get over it, but I tried. See, dad was a very logical, one could say math oriented fellow. So I showed him the math that stated after a person had fallen so far, they had reached terminal velocity, and could fall no faster. It would only take longer to get to the ground, so, it really didn't matter if one fell from a great height. Dad being dad, calmly explained the problem with that was that while one wouldn't hit the ground any harder, that longer period of time it took to fall just meant you would have to be scared that much longer. You know, my dad was a pretty smart fellow.

Good grief. Back when I jumped from 800 feet I at least had a parachute on and a static line to make sure it opened. Climbing that without a parachute seems a little risky to me.

As I watched that, I was thinking, base jumping!!! what a kewl platform to launch off of. You could climb up, and then after the work, jump off. I think the harder part would be the going down. Looked like some tricky foot work to monitor.

It's been five minutes since I watched it and STILL have vertigo! There were times when he only had one foot and one hand on the tower and no safety line. And all the time that heavy tool bag was dangling below him. Not me. No way. No how.
