Santi Gertrudis.
Re: Bull breed???
+1 to Don, and Santa Gertrudis is a cross from shorthorn I think. If not S.G. then possibly highlander cross?

Are you sure? This is a pretty typical SG bull hereabouts:Don McDowell wrote:Santi Gertrudis.
Re: Bull breed???
Looks like a Santi to me, but with just that one picture it could be a progeny of 7 or 8 of the best bulls in the county....

Re: Bull breed???
From what I can see it looks to be a Devon bull. The horns, color and the coat are very much like a Devon.

Re: Bull breed???
Well,..according to the OSU Breeds of Cattle, it appears to me that you have a Dulong which are native to the Yunnan Province of China, I think the horns are a dead give-away. I didn't know you went to China.
Also,..I've found out that they like to be teased with alfalfa cubes, rubbed on the head and ridden with saddles,..have fun .!

Re: Bull breed???
IMO,
its too wide to be a shorthorn and the horns should tip upward not strait out
its a cross of some sort with the curly haired face there is english tones about him. His muscles are doubled up like a charlauis (sp)
When I had cattle I had shorthorn bulls on black angus cows and to find a wide shorthorn bull was next to impossible. long and deep was easy. Thoes blue roans made spectactular mama's
The neighbor kid came over and got one of my blue roan hiefers and showed her in the state fair he took grand champion in the open class thats quite an achievment the calf came out of mama Jane and lonedale ranger. lonedale also had a pen of heifers that took the Denver stock show. Man the phone was ringing then until they found out that his sperm was only good enough to naturaly breed it could not be frozen
My first guess was Santi but the curly face threw a question mark in there
^
Well'll need a CLOSER pic why don't you jump the fence, scratch him behind the ears and get him to pose for you. lol

Re: Bull breed???
My vote is an SG cross with ???????????
Re: Bull breed???
I'm thinking you're right. The bull in the picture doesn't have the "face" of a Santa Gertrudis, nor does it appear to have the hump behind the neck.rangerider7 wrote:From what I can see it looks to be a Devon bull. The horns, color and the coat are very much like a Devon.
Second guess: The much-fabled, but rarely seen, Pygmy Watusi.

It kind of looks like the Red Danes my Grandpa raised a long time ago.

Re: Bull breed???
after seeing the posts by rr7 and rsy, I believe they might be the most correct. I had forgotten about the Devon until they mentioned it.

Re: Bull breed???
South Devon don't usually run that dark, they're more of a tan color like a Gelbvie. They're also polled ( no horns)
Given the location of the op, Santi cross is a pretty good bet.
Not that it really matters, if that thing showed up in my herd he'ld be outa there in short order....

Re: Bull breed???
But, there is a red Devon. You're right, they're usually polled, but I've seen a few that weren't. The lack of a hump makes me really think it's not a pure SG. Those that have suggested some sort of mix are probably right.Don McDowell wrote:South Devon don't usually run that dark, they're more of a tan color like a Gelbvie. They're also polled ( no horns)
