Range Day, for Youth Hunt (With Photos)

Post by Paladin »

I spent 12 hours on the range Monday getting ready for the WV youth hunt that occurs on 30 Oct. I took my Western Field 30-30, my Marlin EBR and a few other weapons that are OT to this forum and spent the day at the Public range near my farm. ( http://fms.ws/3j-Qd/38.93107/\-80.48434 ) The rain was a bit heavy at times but worth putting up with.
The 30-30 with a Leupold 2-7 rifleman scope (not fired to my knowledge for 2 years) was a bit off but with a few adjustments was able to print the three shot group at 50 yds in the photo with Federal 170gr fusion. I put a round in the photo to remind me which rifle shot what group. This rifle was purchased five years ago for under $150 to let kids (my nephews 1st) hunt.
The EBR had not been used for a lot longer and I wanted to get used to it and try the Barska 3x9 Illuminated Reticule scope. The scope was a surprise as I had seen some other Barska that looked like good glass for the money this one over 5 power was very distorted but under 5 power worked OK. I got the rifle to where I could hold about a 4in group at 100 yards with 200gr Remington and Winchester, so it will do. I didn’t try it for accuracy with the suppressor.
The rest of the day was spent on an AR-10, Fulton Armory built 5.56 match upper with AWC Suppressor, a Marvel .22 LR conversion with Gemtech Suppressor, and after dark adjusting a IR Laser on a FN AR-15A2 and EOTECH with NVGs.
Just got a call this evening the teenager who I have taken shooting a few times, that pasted the marksmanship test to go hunting, decided he was going to do something else that day. I am supposed re-qualify for the department that day any how so I guess this year is out

It's a shame the kid changed his mind about hunting, though. . . :(
