This used to be a rural farming area with salt of the earth type folks. Hunting and guns were the norm here for hundreds of years, but the local University/City folks have slowly changed the landscape. Much influx of folks from New York and Philadelphia...this is where they come to live their dream in the country after having messed everything up in those places with their version of "Utopia". I am a transplant from the West, having only been here for 12 years now but even I've seen changes towards the folks becoming more and more radical left. Sad to see these changes in yet one more part of America. I know Conservatives have their major problems, but this far Left Liberalism(more the norm now) will destroy this country of ours in short order if we don't stop it.
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8
I am shocked. N.H. is becoming the same way. I am a transplant myself. I came to my neck of the woods for a more rural environment but N.H. is changing. It is now two states. North of Concord it is still N.H. South of Concord it is Mass. There are more people in the south. More people means more votes and one gets tyranny by majority. The "we know better than you" crowd are moving in from more liberal states in many areas. It happened in Maine, Vermont, etc. Stay positive and stay active. 1886.

Chris,
Maybe you ought to sue New York for that influx of its citizens. Those New Yorkers bring dangerous ideas & practices to your state. Without those New Yorkers, your state would be a safer place. After all, they are causing all sorts of gun problems, right?

I know what your saying Shawn and I agree Sir! But just to clarify, don't want to demean "New Yorkers". More specifically, the Liberals from New York's big cities(actually alot of large urban areas of the North East) are the ones I am speaking of that hold to the Left's value systems and come here to enlighten us. New York has fine folks and also has a hunting culture as you travell outside the cities. That's what I mean I also don't hate people whether they are right or left, but I do detest these ideas that helped murder millions of folks in the 20th century

Yep. I hate being in Burlington among those largely self righteous trust fund hippies
And yet, somehow, our complete lack of concealed carry regulation flies under the radar of the lefties.
C. Cash,
State College (the borough particularly) is an island of liberalism in a mainly conservative area. Did you see the 2004 election break down by county? What you mentioned about NY is true in any state with large metro areas.
Back to the topic at hand. I think part of this goes back to the "zero tolerance" policies the schools have put in place. That's what the school board members who voted against allowing the shoot used as an excuse. We have all seen or heard of abuses of these types of policies. I think they are a sign of laziness. Instead of making decisions on a case by case basis they come up with a blanket policy and don't have to think again. Of course the other part is that some of these people are simply afraid of an inanimate object.
Did you see the article in the sports section a couple of days later? It was about some local youths and how they did at Camp Perry last summer. Some coincidence eh. I bet some of the kids in the article are some of the ones who would have been shooting in the BB gun tournament.
One last thing, by some of your previous posts I thought you were in Texas. My family and I moved to the State College area in 1995. Small world.
In the County I live in (a suburb of Nashville), every High School has a Trap team. They did a segment about it on Shooting USA several years ago. You had big kids, small kids, girls, boys, Berettas and NEF Pardners all competing against each other. I think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread. So far, at least, nobody seams to give it a second thought.

24 hours in a day.....24 beers in a case. Coincidense? I think not.
A couple years ago our schools here in WV brought back archery for grade school right threw high school. Last night on the news they announced that they are going to have gun clubs to and that any kid can take the hunting coarse in school. WV is one of the most hunting, shooting and trapping oriented states in the country. Kids as young as 8 ( Girls and boy's)are hunting with Dad or Grandpa all the time. DNR and Conservation events are on the news channels and in the paper all the time . Wild and Wonderful, West Virginia! Mike
If I can't shoot or pee off my own back porch when I want to then I'm not free and I won't live there. Thank you God for my freedom!

Hello Mav! Well good to see I'm not alone here You beat us by a year..we came in 96. Your right in your description of the area. Lot of good folks here like there's alot of good folks all around everywhere. It is changing though for the worse I believe. I don't know if you feel the same but to me there is almost an open hostility among the left at this point towards those who hold other opinions. A militancy if you will. Maybe it's getting more and more like that everywhere. I am very concerned at this point as to which way our 2nd ammend. rights will head as well as many other important issues.
PS: As to your question, my Dad and his family were from Texas. When he was very young the family packed up and went to where there was work in California(that whole eating thing was very important I guess). My Grandfather(s) farmed in between Bakersfield and Fresno and I spent alot of time there and also near Phoenix, AZ growing up. Moved around in the Army..GA and CO, then back to CA where I met my wife while working for the National Park Service. Finally, we moved back here to be near her family and have been here since 1996. I guess it's a pretty place to be stuck but I'm still having a hard time at letting grass grow under my feet I will try and get a PM off to you tonight.
Thanks to all for your comments and for letting me rant a little.

Mike,
You need to stop advertising those facts or they'll be after y'all too.
I guess the school kitchens will have to take all their cutlery out and the athletic depts' will have to drop baseball and softball as they both send a mixed message as well.
We can't be playing favorites now can we.

It's easier to fool people than it is to convince them they have been fooled.
It happens anywhere. People move from the city to escape from the stuff they created to the country, and then promptly turn it into the city again.
And yes, they know better than you.
In fact, there's a guy named Carson Cressley who is a gay man, (what could be worse or more out of touch?) who has women come on his TV show to have them undress and then he goes about telling them how they can be "sexier".
This is the same thing: out of touch city mice coming in and ruining nice areas because they are out of touch with what's good in the world. Homos.
BTW, Carson Cressley thinks another man's patoot is "sexy", so what the heck does HE know?
Rusty, You make a good point! We aint scared..."I got a rifle and a shotgun and a 4 wheel drive , I can skin a buck and run a trot line and us country boys can survive!" Mike

C. Cash,
I think you are right about the militancy. Some of them are very vocal in public settings. Like they are trying to get a rise out you. Some are very closed minded. Funny, that's what they accuse conservatives of being.
Et al,
To the best of my knowledge there are a least three high school smallbore rifle leagues in the state. The nearest might be in DuBois. The SC school board used the zero weapons policy as their reason for not allowing the guns in the school. They must have forgotten that the high school offers archery and fencing as an option for gym class.
I'm sure a lot of the liberal minded folk are connected to the university. Penn State itself isn't too bad. They have a club rifle team that shoots on campus. If a student living in a dorm wants to bring his/her gun to go hunting, they have lockers available to secure them. And most of the university's agricultural and forest property (thousands of acres) is open to hunting.
