Adios Amigos!!
Guys,
I've had enough of Leverguns. I have been a member here and Sixgunner.Com since '98 and it has been seriously affecting my mental health for some time now. My shrink tells me I'm no longer in touch with my inner feelings and its all caused by big headed egotistical internet so-called "buddies". Anti-depressants, xanax, and a host of other "soul strengthening medication" is doing no help.
Ha! You don't believe that garbage, do you? My skin is as thick as a rhino's.
I'm going to the Rockies for my annual elk hunt---poor man's style---tent on public land.
The gun theme this year is going to be an 26" octagon barreled 1899 Savage in 38-55 that factory letters to be made in 1912. Sight is an original click adjustable Lyman that screws in the same factory drilled holes that a tang sight goes on. Load is 25 grains of RL-7 with a Lyman 270 gas check for a chronographed 1700. 3" high at 100 meters and 8" low at 200.
My sixgun is a 5 and 1/2" Colt New Frontier 38-40 using 10 grains of Unique and 180 gr. bullets cast from an original 100 year old Ideal mould for 1140 fps.
I'll check in with you boys when I get to my son's house -------------Sixgun

Re: Adios Amigos!!
Thanks! Oh! I just remembered--For your information. Any of you boys can go and I'd be happy to show you the ropes. An elk hunt is not expensive---my way .
Plane fare--$319
Bull tag--$500 (a little more this year I heard)
Food- what? $200?
odds and ends like gas $200
I seldom spend more than $1200
The first year is a bit costly as you need a good outfitters tent and other gear. If you don't fly (or have a son who lives there ) there might be more of a gas cost. Heck, we all have pick-up trucks or a little trailer to haul your gear.
Think about it, its all within our own reach. My buddy Gunny and his brother are driving out--they left today. I'll beat them there and I ain't leavin' till Thursday morn. ------Sixgun

Re: Adios Amigos!!
Jack, doesn't your Savage have a "Savage High Pressure Steel" barrel? You can take the old .38-55 to near .375 Win ballistics with the 99. Up the grains to 30 and you'll chrono the 270 at 2000 and change. Well, maybe you want to stick to traditional WHV .38-55 velocity and pressure curves in the old girl.

Re: Adios Amigos!!
Hope you have better luck putting down an elk with a .38-40 than Elmer Keith did. Make sure the .38-55 has done its job before approaching. I suspect had he had a .38-55 on that hunt, we would have missed out on a good story.
We look forward to a full report!

Thanks very much--I'll get the pics on the board asap!
Mike,
Yep, your right, it does have the "High Pressure Steel" barrel. I figure that 270 gr. Lyman will go lengthwise through an elk, even at a anemic 1400, so I put it to 1700 and limit my yardage at 200 meters. Its (the hunt) all about fun anymore and if I connect, its just icing on the cake.
On another note, my buddy Tom is getting about 50 guns from some famous ranch in California. These guns were used from the 1880's on. Many SA Colts, SA Remington 1875's and a couple of 1890's , and a handfull of Winchester levers.
I don't have the details yet and the only thing I know is that the ranch is situated in the last grove of tall Sequoia trees. I'll keep you informed and will have all of the info when I get back.---------Sixgun

About 20 miles from Kremmling in a place called "Buffalo Park" Its about 16 miles in on a dirt road called Red Dirt Road.
I'd sure like to squeeze in a ride down to your place and if we get an elk early on, we will do that. I gotta get your 7 special order 38-55. -Me

Good luck Sixgun.
Somewhere along the flight you'll be passing your guns assuming that Gunny is driving them to CO. Now I know why you had that huge wall tent at the states. Tell Cynthia that all your Leverguns pals have been and are praying for her.
Also, I agree with your cartridge choice in the rifle.

And, NO, you can't have my .38-55!
