1860 Henry Rifle

Post by Gun Smith »

Last night Antiques Roadshow had an 1860 Henry rifle on for appraisal. My wife said I was drooling while it was being shown. My guess it was about a 90% gun. A real museum piece. It even still had the 4 piece cleaning rod in the butt, amazing!. The barrel had 95% of the original blue with only a light rust over. The receiver was nearly unmarked. The stock's varnish finish was dark, but I think original. It was only missing the magazine spring and plunger. It was in the serial number range of guns purchased by the government for the military and had a perfect cartuche and the inspector's stamp on the receiver. How about $35,000.00? Now it will go back into that closet with two sets of sweaty hand prints on it, oh well.

Yep, big bucks those Henrys bring. In 1981 I was approached by a gun collector who had a military Henry for sale. Still had the original sling and nice cartouches. An overall very nice clean and original gun. He wanted $4500 for it. Back then it might as well have been 45 million. I should have begged and borrowed but........you snooze, you lose.--------Sixgun

Yes, they did. The appraiser gave a short history of leverguns. Again, "short" is the opperative word. "New Haven Arms" & "Model 1866 was the first Winchester" were also included in the presentaion. The stock of the Henry had a cartouche on it, and the appraiser said there was one on the barrel, as well. It was nice to see that old rifle.

For those of you (including me) that missed it: Civil War Henry Rifle. I'm off to watch it now.

Edit: Well... as with some other on-line TV programs, I only get the leadin, not the program. Would have been interesting.

I got to handle one this summer when I was out on the shooting trial and stayed at a freind's house. He had one in the vault that had come out of a museum that had closed up. It has a three diget serial number.

Been there, done that too many embarrassing times. Will I ever learn? I doubt it.

I was a little surprised that a military Henry would be appraised that low! Sure it's missing two minor parts, but with the low number of military Henry's made, I wuld have thought that variation would bring much more.
Heck, regular Henry rifles in that condition have brought $35,000+ without the military provenance.

By gum! There's not an awful lot of difference between those Henry receivers and the receivers on the Model 1892! :D
