The Beater 94 Isn't Anymore DURACOAT PICS ADDED
You all may recall the old abused 30-30 I bought from a coworker a couple weeks ago.
She had seen better days, that's for sure. I took it out to the range as it was and tried a handload that I just threw together by picking something out of the manual. It put 5 shots inside 2.5 inches at 100 yards, so I knew the old girl would be a shooter with a little handload experimenting. After trying several combinations of components I had on the shelf, it turns out a max charge of BL-C(2) pushing a 170 gr. Speer is it's definite favorite with groups rivaling most good bolt guns at 100 yards and 50 yard groups with most holes touching.
If it was going to be such a good shooter for me, I figured I owed her a little TLC.
So I stripped the wood, steamed out some dings and lightly sanded it. Then refinished it with tung oil. The receiver was stripped and bead blasted then finished with Duracoat Semi Gloss HK finish. The remaining metal was scrubbed with fine steel wool and oil, then touched up with Brownell's OxphoBlu.
I replaced the busted front sight with a .375" tall 1/16 gold bead Williams sight. A Williams FP that I had on hand was then mounted in back.
So there you have it. Not counting the cost of the rear sight that I already had, I'm still under $200 invested. Not too shabby, if I do say so myself.
The finish on the Duracoat isn't as rough as it appears in these photos. I think being semi-gloss the sun was really bringing it out, making it look grainy. It really looks more like a shiny parkerizing. If it holds up like they say it should, I'm going to like it.

As he described it, it wasn't AND now that he's gone and done this it would sell for $300 lots of places. "Done good" is an apt compliment!jlchucker wrote:WOW is right! Is that the one some fool told you wasn't worth fifty bucks?

Well, you might still call that Winchester a beater but it looks like a "special" beater to me..

Re: The Beater 94 Isn't Anymore
I was impressed! After I picked it up from Midway, I stopped by Harbor Freight and bought a $9.99 airbrush kit. The color is a very thin, watery liquid and you add a somewhat thicker hardener to it, in a ratio of about 12-1. It applied very smoothly and evenly when airbrushed with a very light spray. Definitely wear rubber gloves when working with the stuff. It smells very potent and does not like to come off skin! A little goes a long way. I bought a 4 oz bottle and have enough left to do a couple more guns! We'll see how it holds up over time, but so far I would highly recommend it.Ysabel Kid wrote:Excellent Ted! Now that makes we wish I could get my face down on those without tweaking my neck up to shoot those without the scopes.

Excellent job on the "new" shooter!!! I like my guns the same way I like my truck. Shiny and clean. You sure treated that one right.

Re: The Beater 94 Isn't Anymore
Ted, that was my experience. It holds up well so far. Only problem I had is that the hardener only has a shelf life of about 6 months or so - and they mean it! Best to order it right before you are going to use it.TedH wrote:I was impressed! After I picked it up from Midway, I stopped by Harbor Freight and bought a $9.99 airbrush kit. Great job and one fine looking shooter. Really fine job on that stock! You're gonna like that Dura-Coat, for sure.

Great job on that one Ted.
I sure am happy with that 375BB Winchester beater you sold me. Got a new six cavity mold for it so I can shoot more often. When I get back home I will start casting.
