The safety on my Win 88 has been stuck on fire mode since I've had it. I disassembled the rifle, got the safety working and finished reassembly today.
Since the safety has never operated, I don't know how it's supposed to work and I'm a bit surprised by how it's working now. Namely, I can only engage the safety when the action is cocked. On the one hand, that makes sense because you only need the safety on when the action is cocked. On the other hand, however, I can engage the safety on all my other firearms regardless of whether the action is cocked or not.
Is this simply a feature of the 88 or did I reassemble something incorrectly?
Thank you for your assistance.
Doug

Re: Winchester 88 Safety Operation Question
Darn if I knew..so I had to drag out one of my 88s to check. Your rifle is fine, the safety only goes on when the action is cocked.

Re: Winchester 88 Safety Operation Question
Ah, good answer. Darn if I remembered that and I have had one for 20 years.
Re: Winchester 88 Safety Operation Question
Thanks Charles.
I realized earlier today that I put it in "backwards", i.e., the larger end on the left instead of the right. *sigh*
Thanks again,
Doug
