44/40 in a 444?????

Post by Pop Watts »

Thanks for posting the link to some great reading Slimster.

One article from fiveshot.org mentions using 44-40 rounds as small game cartridges in a 444.

Anyone done this? It just does not sound right.

I have also heard you can shoot 410 cartridges in a 444!

I am the sort of guy who doesn't even like necking up 30-30 cases to fire in my 38-55 so maybe I am too conservative, but if you can fire 44-40, 410 and 444 cases in a 444 then it may well be the most versatile lever gun cartridge around!

Love to hear your comments - CONVINCE ME.

Pop.

Paco has written about using the 44-40 in the 444.

Aaaaaaaaand.... any more feedback than that? Like how did it shoot, how did the brass turn out after, etc, etc?

I have shot Paco's 444 using .44-40 ammunition in it.

Paco put the round into the chamber by hand since they are too short to feed from the magazine. He put the hammer on half-cock and handed it to me. I lined up downrange, pulled the hammer back, tried to settle the sights on a pig (target) and eased the trigger.

It went "BANG". Not real loud. No real recoil. Like shooting a light .38 in a .357 ....

The bullet went "CLANK" against the target and it toppled over. (at least I think I hit it .. I am not gonna claim a miss :D )

Opened the lever easily and removed the empty and handed it and the rifle to Paco. It did not split the brass. If I remember correctly the brass was a little 'straighter' than normal (both 44 and 44-40 are tapered but the 44-40 is tapered in much shorter OAL while the 444 is longer and gentler)

Watched Paco and others go through a bunch of 44-40's that afternoon and have great fun plinking.

Any problem reloading the 44-40 after the case got "straitened"?

I have no clue. Since they were Paco's I am not sure if he reloaded them for 44-40 or kept them for plinking loads in the 444. 44-40 brass is thin and not real strong as it is so working it up and down would shorten case life even more than normal.
