Can a 38-40 BP round take a deer?

A question that has bounced around this forum for quite some time.

No, I have never tried, but I have something that may help hunters make a decision. Attached are two pictures.

I was at the range happily shooting my Marlin 1889 (made in 1891) with some black powder rounds.

The load was: 200 gr .406 LRNFP over 35 grains of compressed FFG.

I was shooting at a 10" gong I had bought. The gong hands on a 2X4, the short side (the inch and three quarter side) facing the shooter.

A friend asked to try and shot low. He hit the 2X4 twice breaking it off about 5" below the gong.

Shots were made at 50 yards.

I think that round had enough steam left to take a deer.

Yes... BP. The bullet went clean through just missing the center of a knot.

38/40 in BP? Think of what a hot 10mm is good for. Deer shouldn't be a probelm till you get to the big Muley's.

Of course it can, IF you do your part. Just think how many deer were killed with it before smokeless powder was introduced. Tens of thousands, I'm thinking.........& probably a lot more. jd45
