I must be just a jinx! While shooting my new Rossi Model 92 lever gun today, it flat out quit ejecting. Actually, sometimes it would eject, then it would not pull the case back from the chamber all the way, all variations of not ejecting. Acted like the extractor hook was not holding the rim, then when it did, the ejector tried to eject too early or not at all. The other Rossi 92 that is being replaced did the same thing... I found an excellent take down complete with photos for this model, but the part I need help with was mentioned and not photographed. The ejector is composed of the ejector itself, an ejector spring, and a little collar. All this slides on the ejctor shaft in some order. Does the ejector collar come before the spring on the ejector shaft or at the very end behind the spring? I reassembled it the first time with the collar last. The action worked fine but it still did not extract/eject right. I thought perhaps the extractor might have some junk under it and was not sitting down flat enough in the groove cut for it in the top of the block. I lifted the extractor by the hook and washed it out with Coleman fuel and then blew it out with an air hose. I did not take the extractor out of the block. I can see where a tiny crosspin has to be driven out. If I do this, how hard is that pin to push back in? I have a hard time believing that two rifles would do the exact same thing after shooting for awhile. I could see a little bit of brass flakes behind the extractor hook, and when I cleaned it, those went away. Could there be more that got into the extractor slot in the block, holding the extractor hook up out of engagement with the case rim? Anyway, I can pull the extractor but it sure would be nice to know how to properly assemble the ejector system. Some of you must have been through this exact same thing already. I can re-assemble the rifle, but I sure want to get it right this time. Thanks for any help you can throw me. I'm pretty frustrated...
Thanks,
GregT.

Greg,
The little collar goes on after the spring. It holds the spring in place.
When you get the pieces in, put a fired case on the bolt under the extractor. Slide it into the receiver pushing it down against the tension of the ejector and the run it into the chamber. That will hold the ejector parts in place while you get the lever and the lever pin in place in the bolt.

Joe nailed it.
If you still have problems, keep asking though. No sense messing something up when folks here like Joe and others will always be glad to help walk you through it.

Re: Please...HELP me with re-assembly of Rossi 92 Lever .45 Colt
Joe: Thank you! I figured there was some trick to this. I almost think I should take the extractor out of the block and clean the extractor slot. I'll bet there is more junk in there that is holding the extractor hook up too high to get a good bite on the rim of the case. I put the action back together right one time, but holding those ejector parts in place is awful. That little collar looks like the tip of the lever cams on the rear of it when it works the action. I'll work on it more tomorrow. Hopefully others may have some suggestions as to what is going on with this thing!

Greg,
The one thing you might want to do is buy Nate Kiowa Jones ( Steve Young ) CD on tuning and working on the 92. He's a gunsmith in Port Arthur TX that specializes in 92 and other lever guns.

He's probably forgot more about the 92 design than most of us will ever know.

Re: Please...HELP me with re-assembly of Rossi 92 Lever .45 Colt
This morning I looked at the extractor as it tried to pull the empty case out of the chamber with my mini Mag Lite and a magnifying glass. I saw the tip of the extractor stab itself into the edge of the rim of the case at the top; it did not set itself up as it should have in the front of the rim. As it began to pull back out of the chamber, the extractor lost whatever little grip it had and the ejector activated and pushed the case back into the chamber. I phoned Braztech and after a "discussion" the man down there told me to pack the rifle up and he would have FedEx pick it up within 24 hours. Got it packed and to the dealer and told customer service it was ready to go. He also told me that an extractor is a restricted part and they don't sell them. This I think was a lie but I had already blown him off a couple of times and didn't want to wreck any good will I might have left... I will get a hold of the fellow you guys recommend and talk to him about this problem. He's probably reading all this and getting quite a chuckle! Oh, well. Ask me when I'll be buying a Model 92 with a 16" barrel to complete the set?
Thanks to all of you guys. Now we wait!

I just wish I'd logged on sooner. Today I dis-assembled my '92 for the first time, and your question about the ejector spring and bushing is one of the few questions I now know the answer to. But Joe beat me to it. I suspect Nate might recommend thinning that extractor so it doesn't have to work so hard to climb over that shell rim.

Another +++ for Stevesgunz. I got his dvd a while back and it was a huge help in disassembling, smoothing up and putting back together my 3 model 92's. He shows the parts and how they go together in detail, and some very helpful "tricks" to help put it back together.
