Returned...

Post by Hobie »

I've been gone to AK (should add for those who didn't care   that I was gone 1-15 Aug) and just returned. Am trying to catch up. Have tried to answer all PMs. If I miss you or don't act quickly enough to suit, feel free to e-mail me as well (as always). Thanks.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Hobie,

Glad you're back, hope you had a great trip.

Question, is there anything I can do to speed up how your blog loads on my antique dial up? Can't afford anything else right now.

Could you go to the website, and click "File" then "Save" and save the webpage as a "Complete Webpage", to view on your computer later...? The "saving" session maybe could be done at night or when you're away from the computer.

Just a thought (from a guy who knows little about computers).

Well, I finally got it all written up and on the blog. Got to do a PPS for family... We took over 700 photos so obviously not all are on the blog! Saw many moose, caribou, bear (black and brown) and other critters including some Dall Sheep.

Read your blog Hobie,...most excellent! Always wondered what it would be like to have someone else handle all the logistics. By the way, are you required to carry a "passport" to get back into the US from Canada in those parts? Last time I was in the Yukon, it was just "hey, how ya doing?" and then go about your business.

A passport (or the passport card which one gets in addition to the passport proper) is absolutely necessary ANYTIME you leave the country. One used to not need one for Mexico or Canada but do now. The card is the short-hand version for those living on the border and traveling back and forth regularly. We got those as a back-up in case the bus burned up or boat sank and we got off with only our wallets.

The worst part was the airlines. One could spend a lifetime exploring and enjoying Alaska. I did want to get home to my dog though.

Hobie do you remember the name of the airline that flew you from Beaver Creek to Dawson? Did they use HS-748's a 44 passenger turbo prop? What did you think of the wooden sidewalks in Dawson? My grandfather was born a mile outside of Dawson City in 1902, my first flying job was out of Dawson in 1994.

It was a Hawker-Siddley, I happen to have a pic of the turbo-prop....

Liked 'em for what they are. I'm afraid that I thought about it in terms of practicality, maintenance required, etc...

Was your great-grandfather a stampeder?

Hobie,
Yes my greatgrandfather was in the Yukon during the Goldrush of 1898, and brought his bride to the Yukon around 1900. I used to be a first Officer, with Air North from 1996 to 1998 on the Hawkers you flew on. Thanks for the pics. I hope the Yukon gave you a warm welcome.

Hobie, thanks for asking about my great grandfather, it was the kick in the seat of my pants to call my Mom and write down some family history, I'm sure my two year old son will enjoy reading someday. Here is what she told me on the phone;

Great grandfather William Kunze was in the Yukon in 1898, great grandma Bertha Kunze was a Schiel ( Her father or uncle invented the Schiel light, used to detect minerals in rocks) , she came into the Yukon in Jan of 1899, through Skagway, and via Horse and sled up the Whitepass, and down the Yukon River. Uncle Ed Kunze was her firstborn in 1900, Grampa Jack Bonner Kunze was born near the Ogilvie Bridge on the Klondike River June 30th 1902. His Sister Florence Kunze was born about 1910 in Dawson.
